  1. Hi
I have a scary movie 2 DVD which i assume is a bootleg!
The picture quality looks like a DVD (asside from the color being off im not sure if its supposed to be or what but thats not the point)the movie has optional subtitles menus some features etc. do it probably isnt a VCD!
My question is that i have a home theatre setup at home (5 JBL speakers a wharfedale sub with a 15" driver a yamaha amp and a pioneer DV344 DVD player)now the "DVD" has 2 english audio modes 5.1 dolby digital and DTS neither of the modes play 5.1 they play 3.1 utilizing my fronts, center and sub now no matter what preset function i use on my amp (aside from 5.1 stereo of course)i cant get the freaking thing to play 5.1 (all my other DVD's do)now is the DVD faulty or does it just not play in 5.1??
    Thanx

  2. My opinion. If the picture quality is DVD then the disk itself might be a DVDR needed for all the space it takes up to produce a DVD quality picture. As for the sound, I have not found a way to get DD 5.1 to burn onto a disk. When creating a disk from an original DVD, the Dolby Surround will work but not 5.1. Probably a rip onto a DVDR.

  3. I agree, most likely a DVDr or a miniDVD, which most cases the 5.1 AC3 track can not be reproduce correctly by mainstream lowend software/hardware....I assume you were given this "crappy" sequel, the only thing they could have hoped ot incorporate, which i doubt, is a multi-channel mpeg-2 stream for SOUND, thats key here DVD video is mpeg-2 but sound is not....the bad part about that, is most DVD players/receivers do not have mpeg-2 multichannel decoding built in...my best advice is not to worry, enjoy the reg Dolby Surround, and give it a couple of years until someone comes through on encoding a AC3 track to CDR(W), DVDr, etc..and then we all can rejoice

Ive made lots of miniDVDS and all contain perfect 5.1 dolby digital..Its easy..You just rip the audio off the DVD and burn it on the miniDVD it is exactly the same..Its only the video which is re-encoded at a lower bitrate.

To answer the original post..maybe the 5.1 has been re-encoded as 3.1 or Pro-logic surround to save space (as DVD-Rs can only contain approx 4.5 GB)

  5. what player do you have Andy??..my miniDVDs do/did not work on my player, nor did I expect it to, when my player specifically says it doesnt...LOL, it just loaded the first screen and froze, also noticed my player read it as a VCD...of course I may not have burned it right either, anyways...what software did you use SpruceUp??

  6. I havn't messed with minicd's yet. If the 5.1 can be copied then thats a new one to me. I'm gonna look into this. I personally would much rather have 5.1 then surround. thanks.....

  7. i think you need a more powerful authoring package to do the AC3/dts soundtracks. i have seen one authoring program like this, where there is a "pro" version for quite a bit more.

think of it this way- if you're not copying DVDs (which they don't want you doing) and you don't own a $1500 software AC3 or dts encoder (if you did you'd pay for the 'pro' version), then what use would the average user have for 5.1 authoring?...

  8. Yeah I did extensive searching again today...and I doubt 5.1 audio is possible with lowend software/equipment....however Im still waiting (hoping to be proven wrong)...and even so, for the time being, there are very few DVD players that will play them....and even those I cant track down where to purchase one from....but not trying to pay $1500 for the real deal....thats stupid, that's $1500 that you buy the DVDs with & be done with it...LOL..o well
