  1. Hello,

    What's the best choice for the audio sampling rate when it comes to (S)VCD's ? Ofcourse a higher rate is better. But which one is better supported and/or does it really matter ? What is the standard for VCD and SVCD ?

    Infact the Question is simple: Should I use 44.100 or 48.000 to reach the standards.

    And how important (besides sound quality) for the standards is the audio bitrate ? I know standard is 224, but would a VCD player / CD-i player stop working when it's i.e. 160 ?

    it does matter, you would be creating an xvcd xcvd or whatever but most dvd player wont care.

    For SVCD all you need is 44.1. I believe 48 will still play in your stand-alone DVD player, but it is a waste a disk space. Also 44.1 is the satndard rate for SVCD.

  5. So.. Standards are;

    VCD = 44.100
    SVCD = 44.100
    DVD = 48.000

    ??

    Thanx !

    Then why is most (S)VCD encoding software standard set to 48.000, and do I always need to reset it to 44.100 ? Is it because the original VOBs are standard 48.000 ?

    About bitrate... is there any brand player that doesn't play a VCD (1150/MPEG1/44.100/352x288PAL/352x240NTSC) with an audio bitrate of i.e. 128 insteed of 224 (I know: it would be a xVCD, and 128 isn't the best choice) ????

    Yup. And CVD = 44.100 as well.

    Yup. It takes the input parameters from whatever you feed it.

    Yes, there is. There are many who will play it fine, and there are many who will not play anything which is 'non-standard'. It's a guesswork.

    One of the pickier VCD players regarding audio compatibility I've found is... PowerDVD.
    Yup. That software player.
    I made a VCD using Mono audio @ 192 Kbps (Which is actually legal for segment items on VCD2.0 spec) and it would:
    • Play fine in my standalone;
    • Play fine in PowerDVD, if I played it in 'File mode' (that is, dragged the .DAT over it]
    • Played without audio in 'Disc Mode'.
    If you want it to be compatible to everything, stick with the standard. Stereo 224Kbps @ 44.1 Khz.

    On the other hand, if you'll be making a CVD or plan to someday put your VCD-compliant streams on a DVD, you might want to consider making an extra encode to 44.8 Khz to be multiplexed with the stream in the future.

    If your taking from DVD, then your better sticking to 48khz, 44.1 downsampling loses a bit of sound quality, and leaving it at 48 doesn't increase the filesize, and ive yet to find a DVD player that wont play a SVCD with 48khz sound, but if you want total compatibility, then use 44.1.

  9. yea, it does make a difference. And in my dvd player, the svcd stutters with 48 audio...oddly enough. 44.1 works fine.

    I think I'm right in saying that the size penalty of saving audio at
    44.8Hkz as opposed to 44.1Hkz is only a few k. I know my DVD
    players won't last for ever so when making a SVCD I try and stick to
    44.1Hkz for future compatability. When making a xCVD (as I do for my most favorite movies), however, I run audio as high as possible as
    I'm willing to take the risk that when a new DVD player becomes
    necessary, a superior recording format will be cheaply available.
