  1. Hello all,
My goal is be able to create the best VCD possible from VHS and DigitalCable. I currently have an Intel motherboard (on board sound) AIW 128,17gb hard drive (secondary drive for capture) 128mb memory, 1ghz processor and a Raite 715 DVD player. I have tried 18000000 to as low as 11500000 bit
    rates
with motion emulation at 75 up to 99 with MMC7.1 and used the regedit tool as suggested. I then save capture to my drive and burn to a CD-RW with Nero demo 5.5, but play back skips with everything I do. I want to be able to capture in real time with no encoding and get the same quality out, as the source going in. is this possible? Am I missing something????????????
    Ahhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Thanks in advance

For the past two months i've been trying to convert my video's to quality cdr format. I have an ATI AIW 128 video and am using easy cd creator 5.0. I have successfully created a VCD but the quality was like coping tape to tape (look like second generati

  2. Are you dropping frames during your captures? Also, what kind of memory are you using?

try playing the mpg before you burn it and see what the results are. If it plays fine there then its probably an issue with the media. I've got a similar setup and VCD burn to a CDR (cheapo blue/gren) play better then CDRW (silver). I wouldn't expect to much from VHS either way.

It could even be the player your using. My DVD (creative 20/40?) and CD (creative 8/4/32) both play the CDR pretty well but see a little degredation in picture on the CDRW.

My Panasonic DV30 (sorry, I bought it before I knew any better) won't even touch the CDR but plays the CDRWs just fine. Its just the opposit on my IBM thinkpad. The drive skips, squeels and hangs the playback after about 20 mins on the CDRW but plays the CDRs with great quality (for VCD).

I have a AIW Radeon DDR AGP using MMC7.1 (latest ones from ATI and registery hack) used to record babylon 5 episodes

  4. I also have Easy CD Creator 5 but stop trying it, because most of the info I see you guys post seems that you can burn non-compliant vcd’s xvcd’s and svcd with Nero. If I use CD Creator it just kicks my CD out. As for memory I have 128mb 133 speed. An HP writer 10x4x32. I was able to create a vcd using mmc7.1 vcd setting but, yes it looks like a copy of a copy.

  5. I’m not dropping frames and I can play back before burning no problem. I’m trying to use CD-RW’s until I can figure out what setting will work best with my Raite. What my goal is to be able to use my system like a vcr and record from satellite as well as vhs to vcd.

  6. You will never capture without losing quality. Your best bet is to capture with VirtualDub and Encode. Yoy mentioned tht you don't want to have to encode , but there is no way around it that I know of.

    OR

Maybe it is your DVD player.

  7. Your captures are ok, but your DVD player may not like the brand of CD-RW you are using for VCD. I've seen in other posts some people solved problems similiar to yours by using CD-R instead of CD-RW. Changing brands may help too.

Have you checked the compatibility list to see if you DVD player is on it?

Also, you will never get the same quality out as your source in, especially using VCD. The best quality you can probably achieve is by using 720x480, MPEG-2, I-Frames Only, @ 15Mbps. The quality should be excellent, but it will take up a lot of disk space.

Using VCD, you can fit 70+ minutes of video into 700MB, but the quality is no better than VHS, if that. An hour of a 720x480 I-Frame capture @ 15Mbps will probably take up nearly 5GB, but your recording will be nearly as good as your source.

That's the trade off, size for quality.

  8. Thanks for the replies. My DVD player is listed, so I will try different CDR’s as well as capturing @ 720x480 (I don’t care about the disk space need) if capturing at that size will give me the best results without encoding I’m all for it. I’ll try it this weekend.
    Thanks again for your help!!!!!
    Cap.
