  1. Hi everyone

I converted a DivX 5.02 AVI to MPEG-1 and burned this to an XVCD.
The audio output "stuttered" when I played the disc on my DVD player and the video slowed down at the same time, so everything was like slow.motion

I tried to find the reason for this and tried all sorts of cures (possible bad
frames etc.) described on this site, but to no avail.

Eventually I found that the problem occured, because I changed the VBV Video Buffer (VBV) in TMPGenc to 0 (automatic), because I saw it recommended somewhere. When I leave it at 40, which is the default, the synch is fine 90% of the time.

I'm wondering why that is? Should I even try to increase VBV ?

    Thanks for any input

Sorry - Never touched that setting, so no hint, besides "if it works - don't touch it!" A rule of thumb as good in encoding as in real life!

  3. Thanks for looking in here! The manual says, that it's the value for the Video Buffer of the "decoder" which I understand as being the DVD player in my case.

Since no-one has replied I will just leave it alone, I guess..

  4. I'm not 100% sure if this is right but I believe the setting tells how much video buffer the DVD player should use for decoding. Since the buffer on the DVD player is physical memory if your setting is higher then what the DVD player actually has it'll cause problems like stuttering (cause it won't be able to store all the information). It'll also cause stuttering if the VBR is too small since the buffer may not be feeding the decoder information quickly enough. So yeah it's one of those settings that really shouldn't be changed
