Hello. I am VERY new to the DVD/VCD scene, and am having a problem. I have a Pioneer DV-C503 DVD Player. I have followed all the instructions on the site to burn a VCD from an avi. The instructions are very easy to follow. However, I can't seem to make my VCD come out full screen. In fact, if I could just make the VCD appear in the center of my screen, instead of top left, that would be better than current. I have tried quite a few configurations (I am using TMPGENC to go from avi to mpg), but no luck. Hopefully, one of you veterans can shed some light on my problem. Great site, by the way.
    Thanks.

  2. I THINK IF U CLICK ON CONFIGURE IN TMPGEnc AND THEN GO TO THE ADVANCED TAB THERE SHOULD BE A SETTING CALLED "IMAGE POSITIONING METHOD" YOU SHOULD PLAY AROUND WITH THAT..I THINK THERE IS A SETTING THAT WOULD PUT IT INTO THE CENTER..JUST PLAY AROUND WITH THAT..I HOPE THAT HELPED!

I tried your suggestion, and the dam things are still showing in the top left of my TV screen. Am I missing something? Is it even possible to center the vcd on the screen, or even show it as full screen on the tv? Thanks.

Sounds like a DVD player problem. What are the specs of the encoded MPEG and how did you burn?
How large is the displayed picture on TV screen?

I'm using tmpgenc to encode and nero to burn. When I burn in nero, it's popping up a windown saying:

The file 'D:\movies\futurama.mpg' is invalid, need MPEG-1 which was encoded for Video-CD:
    audio: 44.1kHz; stereo; 224kBit/s
    video: 352x240/29.97Hz or 352x240/23.976z or 352x288/25Hz

    The following problems were found:
-stream encoding which is invalid for a [Super]Video-CD
    -invalid video stream: 25 frames/second, 320x240 pixels
-invalid audio stream: 44100Hz, 1 channels

You are creating a Video CD V2.0 (CD-i player) complaint CD, but the MPEG file is not suitable for such a disc. How would you like to proceed?

At this point, i just press 'Turn off standard compliance and continue', and it burns the video cd.

As far as TMPGENC settings are concerned, they are as follows:
    Stream type: Mpeg-1 video
size: whatever is given for the movie
    frame rate: 25fps
    Rate control mode: CBR
    Bit rate: 1150
    Motion search precision: normal
    Video Source Type: Non Interlace
    Field Order: Bottom field first
    Source Aspect Ratio: 1:1(VGA)
Video arrange method: Tried most all of them.

The picture on the screen comes out at different sizes. I'm sure that has to do with the size given during encoding. Problem is, the picture does not change size even if i specify 'full screen' during encoding.

Any ideas would be excellent. Maybe one of you can translate this for me. Thanks for all the help guys. It is very appreciated.

Okay as i said i'm new to this but...
I think i figured it out. I finally realized you can load settings in TMPGENC, and there's one for Video CD(NTSCFilm). I'm encoding now, and I think that'll do the trick. But correct me if i'm wrong.
    Thanks.

In TEMPEnc, you have to select the LOAD option, then select the apropriate VCD MPEG Template you want to use.

It must be the VCD compliant templates.

  10. I am also new at this but here goes. i know the errors you've seen. your options are to continue, re-encode, or turn off standard compliant. here's what i do. turn of standard compliant and check the box for ntsc resolution. When I play my vcd's on my DVD player I have three options to select. MULTI, NTSC, PAL. I have to select NTSC. The other two options don't show the picture right. As far as the encoding itself, I have fiddled around with all kinds of different setting. Got tired of toying and now use video cd 1246kbps (ntsc).mcf template on TMPGE.

Better go the easy way. Select your video and audio source and after that load a VCD template. Now you can be sure, that TMPG creates a VCD compliant MPEG-1. If you burn this MPEG with Nero, no window will pop up and tell you any errors.

    I found some wrong settings.
    25 frames/second is PAL framerate
    320x240 is NTSC resolution
Audio should be 44100Hz 2 channels

If the source aspect ratio is 4:3 (16:9), set it to 4:3 (16:9), full screen (keep aspect ratio)
    Output aspect ratio 4:3 (16:9), if you have a 4:3 (16:9) TV.

  13. I'm having the same problem but only with SVCD. VCD(MPEG1) works fine. I have even been able to up the transfer rate (I guess that means it is XVCD). But as soon as I create a 480X480 SVCD, I get the picture only on the left side of the screen no matter what image position method I picked. Nero gave me no errors either.

  14. I figured out the problem. I was not telling Nero to make a SVCD instead of a VCD. When I changed to the SVCD settings, It works great. I encoding using the templates found at http://www.geocities.com/aussie01au/SVCD.html.
