If you make a Non-Spec VCD it may not FF or Rewind (go back) on some players. The spec calls for 1150KB video @ 352X240 and 224KB audio. Ulead Media Studio Pro 6.0 is set at 1123KB video and they play fine on my players.

  5. Is this DVD player dependence ?
I play VCD and SVCD on a pioneer DV333,
and so far I have no problem at all.
I use Nero 5.5. for all the VCD/SVCD creation.

  6. I've been converting my files into .bin using VCDImager and then burning it with Nero. No problems with FF/REW nor GOTO after this. You should be able to find the program under Links and also the instructions under Tools.

Especialy if you have a philips DVD, use Tmpeg, --->Settings ---> G.O.P.---> headers interval=1. It works.
I have had same problem. You can find more on the forum.

  8. On a standalone VCD player, you can made an ordinary VCD without the scandata.dat file or any special file, and still be able to fast forward and rewind. Not sure about DVD players though.

  9. Squibbles,

The SVCD FFW and RWD issue is a little bit different from that of a VCD.

I think so. My home-burned CD would Rew/FF on my DV-K302CD but not on the Philips player of my friend...

  12. At this Moment it`s only possible to FF/RW if the Single Stream is not over 40 Minutes. If the Stream is exactly 40 Minutes and under it`s no Problem to FF/RW.

This works on my Philips DVD 751 with Firmware 7.12.

  13. I had the same problem with my Apex AD700 DVD Player...

Someone posted a message about a file to create (scandata.dat wich contain SCAN_SVCD or something like that) and put in one directory of the vcd (from NERO burning software) and then burn the CD... That's what corrected my problem...

Original message found on this forum...

  14. I don't think it is DVD-player dependent. I can play my VCDs on my friends DVD players and mine. They rewind/FF on both. As for what sturchill said about it about it only working if the VCD is under 40 minutes, I don't know where he got this information, but i have no trouble FF/RW vcds that are over 40 minutes.

  15. actually the capability to FF/RR or goto is dependent on various parameters:
    • firmware version (e.g. for philips DVD players updating firmware may improve on FF/RR and/or GOTO)
    • player capatibilites (e.g. the pioneer players I've tested so far, simply are not able to goto by time index into a SVCD, although it works for VCD)
    • mpeg2 stream characteristics (i.e. compliantness) (this is related to the firmware as well, since the firmware may make some assumptions, e.g. sequence header/GOP/I-frame access point sector, which if broken may confuse the firmware
    • disc structure of a SVCD, i.e. the files contained on the disc, /SVCD/SEARCH.DAT, /EXT/SCANDATA.DAT and sometimes /SVCD/TRACKS.SVD (the most prominent example of this is nero which keeps creating alterning broken files, depending on the version)

...as to the last point, some people believe nero is ok, just because it works for them, but that's not because nero is actually a good svcd authoring tool but just because their players are such tolerant as to ignore nero's faults! that is, such comments should be written in a more critical way/usefull way ("it's not nero's fault, I've been using it all the time and have never had problems" vs. "nero version x.y.z works for my player, with mpeg2 streams created with xyz when authoring SVCDs&quot since only this way we can find out which version works for which playing devices...

...as to the often mentioned /EXT/SCANDATA.DAT-NERO hack... I hope you all know why it is actually a (non-compliant) hack, and may even confuse some players' firmware...!

  16. The 40 Minute-Limit is true. But i can only say that it`s on the Philips DVD-Player 751, the one which i have. I tested it!

  18. I did burnt a SVCD (with Nero) and was able to play on my DVD player. The quality is excellent. Unfortunately, I was not able to FWD/REW. I even tried using the scandata.dat trick, but no luck. Any ideas?

    Thanks.

  20. I haev an APEX AD600A used to be I could only ff/rew on VCDs but not SVCDs. However, I found that if I:

    1) encode the video (MPV) seperate from the audio (MP2)
    2) mux them together with bbMPEG
    3) burn Image (I use TSVC to add chapters http://www.ttool.org)

I can use ff/rew/goto/etc. on my (x)SVCD too.
