I've built my own PVR/home theater system in an old PowerMAC case (spray-paint it black, looks just like a piece of Sony equipment!).
I've got a micro-ATX C3-800 mhz motherboard, 128 MB RAM, a DVD drive, onboard AC97 and a generic bt878 PCI TV capture card all squeezed in there. I was originally doing the project under Linux, and found a piece of software called Ding/IRFC (http://bogmog.sourceforge.net/document_show.php3?doc_id=30) to handle the display and playback of my recorded movies.
I've recorded a large number of episodes from my favorite shows, like Married With Children and The Simpsons. I've got around 300 episodes total, all in DIVX.
Anyway, I wasn't happy with the offerings under Linux. I've converted my box to Windows 2000 and I'm looking for some software. Ideally I'd like to find a combined Tivo/PVR application, but for now I'll settle for a full-screen file browser that can be remote-controlled (LIRC, etc).
I did find Media-BOX (http://media-box.org), but it only shows a list of 4 videos per screen. Scrolling through 100 screens to find the show you want is a pain. Anyone know an application that's more like a full screen file browser that can be remote controlled??

Showshifter is the best pc pvr/video player/mp3 jukebox. It can be controlled via IR remote, the UI is easy to use on a TV, and it has the ability to control an external cable/sat box. It also has a dvd player, but it's pretty limited. It can record to divx, wmv or any avi codec you have installed and the pro version bundles in Divx5 pro. It can interact with a few web based EPGs, as well as DigiGuide if thats available.
The video browser lets you scroll through your file list and play the video from the same screen. It's also skinnable, so you can adapt the UI to your tastes if you're into that sort of thing.
I've got it on 2 dedicated PVR machines on my lan, and I've got them set up to see & play each others recordings, as well as the big mp3 library on my fileserver. It's been recording 6-10 shows a day for a couple months now without a hitch.
There's still a lot of room for improvement too.
It's at least worth playing with the 30 day demo:
