[b]How to Install Pioneer DVR-AO4?Please help![/b]

Hello everybody

I have Compaq Deskpro Pentium III 800MHz, with 256MB RAM, 20GB HD. I am planning to buy DVR-AO4. I want to install it myself because they charge lots for this extra service. I have a built-in CD-ROM drive and a Yamaha CD-writer which was added later. I am planning to remove the CD-ROM drive and install the dvd burner in place, myself. I have installed extra RAM and video cards before but never done this kind of installation before. I need some references which would help me get on with this. If anybody can recommend a website where I can get detailed info, I will appreciate it a lot!

remove your cd rom drive!, if the yamaha is IDE then set it to slave and put it on the master channel with the main drive (as it has buffer protection it will be ok) or an alternative pci ide card could be used. The result of this action will give U the secondary master channel to put ya spanking new pioneer drive in the machine. Mine is set up similar just I kept my 16* yamaha as a slave to the pioneer & it works... the other suggestion was just an alternative.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to give me info on this! But I must be honest, I really have no idea how to diagnose which drive is slave or master or how to set the burner as the master or the slave, where to go in the computer and do all this stuff. The terminology is not so familiar for me! If u can explain this to me (regarding me as a newbie in these tech terms!) I will be GREATFUL!

I would go to a site that would have info and possibly pics to help you along, although the drive will come with instructions, you could always go to place like www.ehow.com, good luck.

On the back of the CD-Rom drive (and DVD drive) you have a 4 wire power connector, a 40 pin data cable and a set of pins that look something like :::: (bad diagram but you get the idea) there are three settings you need to worry about called MS SP and CS (or something similar) . MS is the setting for Master, SP is the setting for Slave and CS is for Cable Select. There should be a sticker somewhere on the drive telling you which setting corrosponds to which pin (on the pioneer it is just above the fan on top of the drive).

All you need to do is remove your CD-ROM and look at what it is set to, Master, Slave or Cable Select, then set the DVD to be the same and install into your system. You may need to set your PC's BIOS to identify the drive but after that everything should be AOK
