  1. Tracks vs. Chapters vs. Index vs. Scene
What is the difference of the above?

It appears that "chapters" (read entry points?) in (S)VCD are really "indexes" to the standalone player. I have seen this evidenced by the >>| button advancing chapters (literally) in a DVD but does not in (S)VCD. To advance a "chapter" in a (S)VCD I have to change the "Search mode"...

Even the LCD display on my Sony DVP NS715P displays "Chapter" while playing a DVD and "Index" when playing (S)VCDs... It has two diffent LCD llights for these functions. I am hoping someone can explain the difference...

  2. The concept of chapters in DVD is completely different to that on S/VCDs.

Thus any lights or numbers that come up on the DVD player have no relevance when it comes to S/VCD chapters.

Similarly, DVDs don't have "tracks". Tracks on S/VCDs are completely analogous to "tracks" on an audio CD.

To try to understand what S/VCD chapters are, try reading: http://www.vcdimager.org/guides/chapters.html

  3. Thanks! I understand what you are saying. Here is a redumentary question. Why dont the Previous / Next buttons on any DVD Standalone Player I can check (Sony NS715P, Sony 300S, GoVideo 850) work in a (S)VCD? I would expect these machines to intuitively know that PREV NEXT in a DVD should move "chapters" and PREV NEXT in a (S)VCD should move "entry points."

I think there is one line in the link you gave me that is extremely relevant. I missed it the first time I read it...

"One just has to accept that the next and prev buttons on the remote are not quite context specific..."

    ARRGGGHHHH!!!

  4. The best way to learn how S/VCD "chapters" work is to read the above article and make some chaptered S/VCDs yourself with VCDEasy...

Unfortunately, the "chaptering" system on S/VCDs is far from ideal. Thankfully the DVD chaptering system is much more logical.
