I've noticed that when I play a DVD-R in my DVD players they vibrate. I'm guessing it's the motor. This does not happen when I play a normal DVD. You can feel the player vibrating if you place your hand on top of the player cabinet. Could this damage the DVD player? has anyone else noticed this?

I've played quite a few DVD-Rs in my two set-top players and in 3 DVD drives. I never noticed any unusual vibrations. It could be you have a bad batch of discs that are slightly unbalanced. Some vibration is normal, but if the player is 'walking' like an overloaded washing machine- then you have a problem. :P

If discs are way out of balance, it could strain the DVD player mechanism or strike the lens or other part.

What kind of DVD player do you have? I have a Pioneer 343 which sometimes is noisier and marginally more 'rumbly' then my older Panasonic which is extremely quiet. I think it's more the motor and construction than an unbalanced disc.

Do you have paper-labels on the DVDs in question? That can cause balancing problems.

  4. The sound you are hearing is likely a result of a misread. The data stream buffer detects an uncorrectable sequence and forces a speed change,
ranging the laser back to track 0 to get sync and then returning it too
the offending portion of your DVD disc. It sounds alot worse than it
really is and unless it is doing this for several minutes I can't see how
it would cause significant problems with the spindle.

  6. mol3000,

I honestly don't know. You could be right but it could also be to do with
the laser and reflectivity of the dvd-r, or perhaps a firmware problem
that can be fixed via a loader upgrade. For whatever reason, the DVD rom mechanism is having difficulty reading your disc.
