alright, i just got my capture card working so i could record home videos onto my computer and make small movies. i just made a simple 3 minute flick with one transition effect and then saved it. i used dvd quality capturing at setup. when i opened nero and selected svcd and tried to burn what i'd just made, it said i need a special mpeg2 codec plugin. is this because i choose dvd quality capturing? should i choose mpeg 1 next time?... but if i do, isn't the quality going to be lower? thanks for any help, peace

Nero still doesn't have mpg2 encoder built in.
    Make this:
    1) Run TMPGenc software and load SVCD template and after browse your movie.avi file and run to encode it.
    2) When finished, go to Nero double click on SVCD template and DISABLE ISO box (not compliant SVCD) and drag your movie.mpg file to the correspondent window area and burn it.

Considering that TMPGenc has encoded your movie.avi file in to SVCD (compliant/standard/ISO) you will not have any problem to play it in your PC if you have mpg2 decoder.
THE OTHER QUESTION IS: if you have DVD Player Unit. Are you sure that it plays SVCD?

I hope give you some help.

thanks for the help. are there any special settings that i should put tmpgenc on?... are some better than others or are the default fine?

i'm currently going to be playing all my svcd's on my computer... and later buy a dvd player that will play them since my current player only supports vcd. peace

    JCrew, you're welcome!
For me SVCD default template works fine in my DVD Player Unit.
If you change some settings please take care because you will have a XSVCD NOT SVCD(standart/compliant/ISO)and in the future when you buy your DVD Player I don't know if it'll play XSVCD. OK?
Go to "DVD Players" in this page (left side red column)and you'll see a big list of DVD Players models and their configurations/prices and some tests made by users.
In this site you will see many templates for XSVCD.
    So long.
