I used the vcdhelp bitrate calc tool to determine the bitrate needed to fit 110 minutes of xVCD (352x240) on to a single 700M CD-R. The result was 760 kbps.

I encoded the source file with TMPGENc set to 650 CBR and the result is a 1.06G file which requires 972M on a CD-R. Won't fit!

The last time I asked a question like this, I got a lot of great explanations on how to fit more video on a single CD. What I really want to know is.... why doesn't the calculation work????

Demux your file to audio (mp2) and video (m1v) streams in tmpgenc and remux as "VCD (non-standard)". Probably when you demux you'll see a "padding stream" in addition to the audio and video streams.

If tmpgenc is set to use standard VCD it seems to add padding so that the total bitrate is the same as a standard VCD. I know you can set it to non-standard VCD when you set up your encode instead of having to remux, but off the top of my head I don't remember which tab the drop-down list is on. If you look you'll find it, though, it's obvious once you know what to look for.

Thanks Sterno, that was exactly right! Resulting file was well below the capacity of a 700M CD-R.
