Last time I checked, DivX on Mac was known to still have some problems with MP3 audio, though the problems I was hearing about were stuttering audio, not a lack of audio. To tell you the truth, I haven't exactly had great luck with MP3 audio on Windows either, but I'm never sure if it's the fact that it's MP3 audio or if it's just that the source material is a little out of sync and the DivX+MP3 compression makes it worse.

  4. Make sure he is using the official DivX codec from divx.com and have him use the validator app that comes with it. It will generate another avi which will play just fine in both PCs and Macs... the MP3 VBR in AVI is a hack, and doesn't work on Quicktime, and doesn't work on PCs without the DivX codec. The validator app tweaks settings in the AVI to make it work better on both platforms.
Slaughtering the competition with amatuer-quality VCD authoring abilities... fear my non-l33t skillz.

  5. If your friend is running OSX, Video Lan Client plays AVI,
    DiVX etc. very nicely.

    the app: vlc-0.4.4
