I know I'm firing a load of bonehead Qs at you but I'm struggling to get a grip of all these encoders.
I've a film in Mpg2 I want to burn to disc. The file has already been split so I think I just need to encode it to Mpg1.....right?.
I've been using TMPGEnc to split and convert .avi files but It doesn't want to recognise the mpg2 file.
    SO
    1. How do I convert MPG2 to 1
    2. How do I know what format my files are anyway

Please bear with me until I get a better handle on things, I'm reading this forum every day in my quest for knowledge but It's slow in sinking in.

    Cheers

  2. Hi:

I am not more than a newie here. However, as no one has yet answered, let me try.

It is your TMPGen a free or plus (purchased) version? If a free, Have your 30 days for MPG2 been expired?

To open MPG2 in TMPGEnc you will need to use the TMPGEnc MPEG2 Plugin in the tools section of this site. However, it will only allows you to open the MPG2 as video, no audio. So for extract audio you will have to use other tools like DVD2AVI. I can not help you with that, but you can find in the how to section how to create a wave file for your MPG2 file to use it in TMPGEnc.

The other option is to use Power DVD to obtain the MPG2 codec that comes with it. With this codec installed you will be able to open MPG2 files (video/audio). However (this is not my favorit word), if your 30 days of MPG2 expired you will not be able to convert or use any MPG tools with an MPG2 file.

    Hope this help.

    THX
