  1. Oh OK... I manage to open it somehow.

The website never actually did say HOW TO open the .toc file. It just said "Open the file". Some PC might not have any programme associated to that file extension (.toc). So when prompted, we can use NOTEPAD to open the file... Or if not promted, we can right-click the file and choose "Open With" and then choose NOTEPAD...

    This is just for info....

Anyway, Baldrick, are the Audio tracks in the CD-DA folder?
The commmercial AVCD have nicely packed all audio files in the CD-DA. Which made them behave like CDV (CD-Video). There's no need to skip the video tracks.

Like Virtualli said, it could be due to player. BUT if the audio tracks are still in the same folder as the Video files, then it means the VCD2k/Gear method works the same way as the VCDEasy/Fireburner method. Of course latter is preferred since it is so much easier.

Can you please check your AVCD and let me know? Thanks

Perhaps it wasn't clear, but when someone says "open a file", it is reasonable to assume that they mean to open it in a text editor.

The answer is yes. I believe Baldrick answered this before. He said that he got the audio "DAT" files inside the CDDA folder.

  3. Well, there's been some preoblem Gear part...

I am using Gear Pro 6.02.
At the "Open External Physical Image", I use the file that I have saved... say splittercue.txt. I have typed in the track info and save as a text file.

As for the GEAR parameters, I chose "XA", "2352", check "pregap...", pause "150".

But, it gives error msgs as below:

This is how my cue sheet looks like...

I purposely try to make 1 video, 3 audio trk to make the cue sheet looks the same... obviously no "track 1" as the error say.. if I follow the website's instruction correctly

So what have I done wrong then?

  6. Well.... OK... finally completed the procedure and created one 8)

This process managed throw all the audio files in the CDDA folder and video into MPEGAV folder. I was so excited at first and thought THIS to be THE ONE that I had wanted to created....
BUT same problem I faced.. same as Baldrick and the past ones using Fireburner - Have to skip track manually on my CD player.
(Please note that my player can play the commercial AVCDs with no problem like having to skip track. It is a recent bought player.)

So now we know that it is not COMPLETELY the problem with putting the audio track in the CDDA folder....

I now look back at my few AVCDs and re-compare the differences. Apart from some with extra folders....
    - Some comes with the Karaoke folder (dunno what this is for).
    - Some comes with extra files in their Segment Folder (I suppose this is for the relevant menu?)
    - All have different content for the Cdi folder. So I don't think this is a factor?
    - Another point to add is that some Ext folder comes with the file Scandata.dat.. some don't.... maybe this is not so important also?

But all come with a similarity.. They have extra files in both Ext and Vcd folder.

    The entities are:

    For Ext folder:
    Lot_x.vcd
    Psd_x.vcd

    For Vcd folder:
    Lot.vcd
    Psd.vcd

It seems the file pair are compliment to each other pair.

I don't know if this finding is crucial in finding out why commercial AVCD can plays so "cleanly" on CD player.
Perhaps some experts might be able to figure this out?

Still unsuccessful after so many failures and frustrations!!
    Sigh..... [/b]

PS: Whatever happened to bbb who mentioned that he has successfully created one commcercial one using VCDImager/Fireburner?

  7. How very interesting...

I'm kind of intrigued to know how they create these "AVCD"s then...

Can you get CDRWin to extract a CUE/BIN image of your AVCD?

How many physical tracks has it got?

What does VCDDEBUG tell you about the image?

What happens when you try running VCDXRIP on the image?

You can get a demo of CDRWin: http://www.goldenhawk.com
For the VCDImager tools, a GUI: http://www.michaeltam.com/vcdimager_tools_gui.html

  8. Please list the titles of any commercial "AVCDs" that play VCD as expected and do not require Track 1 and 2 (etc) to be skipped to access the CDDA files.

  9. I wonder if it would be possible to add some CD-Text to play before or during the first (data) track advising listeners using CD-Text enabled players to skip to the first audio track?

  10. It was a real "mess" to create a "real" vcd with cdda but it worked:
Despite what it says in the guide, Tocsplit (v1.2 - setting 2) does create valid .cue/.bin files with the cdda tracks, which after a slight syntax correction to the .cue file in notepad, can be burnt with cdrwin.

example of tocsplit generated cue file

    FILE "AC3DTS2_.BIN" BINARY
    TRACK 01 MODE2/2352
    INDEX 01 00:00:00
    TRACK 02 MODE2/2352
    INDEX 00 00:21:00
    INDEX 01 00:23:00
    TRACK 03 AUDIO
    INDEX 00 00:54:18
    INDEX 01 00:57:18
    TRACK 04 AUDIO
    INDEX 00 01:34:61
    INDEX 01 01:36:61

This was a test project using dolby digital and dts encoded cdda tracks, and it played fine in both my standalones (pioneer & wharfedale M5).

Fireburner 2.1.7 requires registration to burn CDs! (absurd but true).
How could anyone evaluate it now?

Before I dive into all this, I have a couple questions.
First, what I am thinking of attempting. I have VCD's of live rock concert performances. This being the case, the whole disc is one long video, because there really are no gaps between the songs.
With the systems mentioned above, can I make VCDs of these that will also play in a cd player? Will the audio and video still sync when playing as a video? Can I split the audio into multiple tracks and still have it sync with the video?
I just want to make sure it is possible to do what I want before I even attempt doing it.

tay666: No it wont work. You must first have the vcd video (with audio) and then wav/pcm audio only tracks.

  16. hello everyone
so has anyone come up with a final solution of burning an AVCD, which will works perfectly fine with cd-players and vcd players and computers, and while playing in cd-players or vcd players, we won't need to skip tracks?
    thank you very much!^^

    Baldrick...

You Rock!! this works awesome for me!

I'm working on mixed mode compilation disks for local (CT, USA) band promos, and I'll let you know what kind of responses I get back from my (ahem) beta testers..

    Thanks again!

  23. Sorry.. went out of action for a while.

OK vitualis, I have tried the programmes but it won't work (due to the complexity of the programmes) thus I 'm still not able to create an image file out of the AVCD.

    ANYWAYZ...
I believed I have said this before, there are basically 2 types of AVCD. One "untidy version" comes with a "Unplayable 1st track" (usually the sleeve will say "track 1: Format Date, Not Playable"). For this type, if you put it in a DVD player, it will automatically jump to the first video track (track 2).
Another "tidied version" comes with perfectly no such "Unplayable track". So the first track is the video.
    Examples:
Type 1: Kylie Minogue AVCD (1 format data, 4x videos, 5x audio)
    Type 2: Bardot AVCD (3x videos, 2 x audio)

Both types works perfectly on both CD player and VCD/DVD player. Meaning to say the player will play the rightful media without having the user to manually skip track.

I am unable to use the suggested programmes provided to rip the image file, probably I don't know how to use them. I am however able to rip the image using "CLONECD" (This is the PERFECT programme one would use to copy a COPY-PROTECTED CD. They use the extract image method to overcome the copy-protected lock.)

My point is, I am only successful in using this programme to extract the image files of the AVCD I am trying out on (Bardot AVCD).
It results in 3 files (for this example)
    IMAGE.IMG (eg, 1.6 Kilobytes)
    IMAGE.CCD (eg, 191 Megabytes)
    IMAGE.SUB (eg, 7.8 Megabytes)

The data are all in the .CCD file

So my question is, is there any programme that can read these files and probably we can get a hint on how the commercial AVCD makers make their AVCD from these image files.

If not, in order to save time, will vitualis please provide a brief step by step on how to use those programmes you have recommended to extract the image files? Thanks.

PS: If someone else already found a solution, please do share.

    Thanks for looking...

  24. this seems like a very interesting thread, and I would to do some testing in this area but, before I go ahead I wanted to get some clarification as to what type of cd is the final goal.
? Audio Cd that will play tracks sequentially on any player and also include some video files (preferably vcd 2.0). if I play this in my computer what should happen, play it as a vcd (same audio tracks) or just play the regular audio (normal audio cd). ?
    Quote Quote
  25. well I did a small test & hopefully I'm the right track, in any case here it it is.
I created what I think is called a mixed mode audio cd, it has some audio tracks that play sequentially in my standalone player or in my pc using and audio cd app. (media player, etc). It also has a small vcd slide show (some pictures with background music) that can be played via a vcd player on the computer, this second part is ignored by the standalone player.
let me know if this is what this thread was looking for and I will post how to recreate this.

  26. This thread is about how to create a commercial AVCD.
AVCD is yes, like you've said, a VCD2.0 that contains Video tracks and Audio tracks on the same media (VCD).

It is supposed to be able to:
play like a NORMAL audio CD on an AUDIO CD PLAYER
play like a VCD on a VCD/DVD player

The ones that we have created have not been 100% successful because we still have to MANUALLY SKIP away the video tracks when playing the CREATED AVCD on an AUDIO CD PLAYER (since the Video tracks comes before the audio tracks). It plays well on a VCD/DVD player though.

FOR EXAMPLE, the AVCD that I have created contains 3 video tracks and 4 audio tracks... so total 7 tracks (Ok until here?).

When put on a DVD player, the CREATED AVCD played fine, that is, it played the 3 video tracks alright. At the end of play, the DVD player showed "Total 3 tracks"... indicating there's 3 VIDEO tracks.

HOWEVER, when put on an AUDIO CD player, the first 3 tracks (being the video tracks) were being played as silent tracks . So, I have to manually skip to track #4 for the FIRST audio track. At the end of play, the CD player showed "Total 7 tracks".
This is not supposed to be.... A working commercial AVCD will only show "Total 4 tracks" on my AUDIO CD player (since there are indeed only 4 AUDIO tracks).

Are you able to create one as described
    Quote Quote
  27. no you cant, i've seen AVCD auctions on ebay that give directions on playing the disc. you have to skip the video tracks when playing in audio player. did you creae a working AVCD (for acronyms sake, thats what they're called) what software did you use.

  28. i have problems for burn svcd & vcd with cdda tracks, using fireburner 2.1.7. the program starts in sesion at once, but no video can display sucessful.

using dao16 & dao 96 there is a vide in the screen but using chapters, dao 96 can display the last chapter. wath is the rigth configuration for fireburner.

the video bin files was created with vcdeasy.

  29. my first attempt was actually no more than a cd extra. (sorry about that).
in any case I'm still trying and the following is what I have acomplished so far. following vcd 2.0 standards I can get the Standalone player to play the video files and if I put the cd in a regular cd-audio player it will display more tracks than what I have, in this case I know I had 5 audio tracks but the player displayed 7, once I skipped over the first two tracks then it played fine without having to skip to play the next one.
in one player (an old boombox) it tried playing the first two tracks but it just produced a srceaching noise. on a second player (car cd player) it also recognized the first two tracks but it did not play any sound.
humm, now if I can figure out how to skip the none audio tracks this just might work.

  30. I have followed the instructions in the "How-To.." article on how to create an AVCD and was satisfied with the results with the discs i have created.

There are several commercially released AVCDs here in the Philippines thats works similar to this in the topic wherein we need to skip the video tracks to play the audio tracks in a CD player. Some examples are Kylie Minogue's Fever album, Blue's All Rise album, Vina Morales' Reflections album, and Patricia Javier's Secret album.

There are some questions though that came to me.
    1. how can i add a 2 second pre-gap between the audio tracks?
    2. what if i move the video tracks at the end of the audio tracks? will this still be readable in the players as an "AVCD"?
    3. is there any other burning utility/software i can use that can make AVCDs aside from FireBurner?

Also, i would like to share some of my encounters doing this AVCD project. I have 1 video (4 mins long), and 16 songs in the compilation. I have not encountered any errors in doing this project, but in the finished product i encountered a loud "tik" sound in the end (perhaps at the last frame) of tracks 11 and 12 just as the song exits for the next song. I have checked each song's original wave sources and they are all clean. What could have caused this to be printed on the CD? I burned several copies of the same project and they all have the same "tik" sound at the same spots.

    Thanks.
