which of the connections is best for transfering vhs tapes to dvd....or are svideo, dv, rca, scart connections about the same in terms of the picture you get.. just some are faster

The speed of capture never changes, just the quality changes with the different types of connections you use.
If you mean digital video by DV, thats the best, but its overkill for VHS.
RGB SCART is next in quality after digital. SCART is just the connector, alot of times its just S-video or composite, but it can carry RGB which is the better of video standards.
S-Video is next in quality, this is the often the best you can get out of a VCR here in the US.
Composite is only better than a RF connection. -
thx for the reply will be geting a dvd recorder in the morning and one of the ones i am look at comes with a dv input/output connection as well as 2 scart ones plus a svideo so just trying to work out if its worth the extra cash to have the dv connection...might be worth it as i plan to get a new camcorder at some time which will no doubt have a dv input/output but for now want to transfer all my red dwarf vhs tapes to dvd before they wearout to much
