Windows Media Player doesn't like the *.sub files. I believe you can open *.sub files with MicroDVD Player available here:
http://www.tiasoft.de/
Windows Media Player has another format that it likes for subtitles called *.SMI...
You should be able to convert it with a program like this:
http://doom9.org/Soft21/Files/Subtitles/sub2sami.zip
If you convert it properly just give the filename the same name to match your movie! For example: To go with Bean.avi call the newly generated file Bean.smi and put it in the same directory. Select captions in WMP and you should be able to turn them on now!
Good luck!
