  1. Ok, I've read and read. My eye's are crossed. Is it possible to go directly from a Matrox mjpeg AVI file and encode through tmpgenc into a mpeg1 or mpeg2?

I can take the mjpeg, run through vdub, and then through tmpgenc, but when I try and read the mjpeg in tempgenc, it gives me file unsupported error.

I have the nimo codecs, divx311,divx5.02, etc....

    is it possible?

The Matrox MJPEG AVI file uses a hardware-based codec and usually needs the Matrox card to be present to play back the file.

Some programs, and TMPGEnc appears to be one of them, cannot deal with the hardware codec.

VirtualDub on the other hand is able to use the hardware if present and is also able to use its own internal MJPEG reader if the hardware is missing.

The way around this is to open the file in VirtualDub and 'frameserve' it directly to TMPGEnc - this way you are prcessing the file only once.

  3. I have used a Matrox G200 Marvel for years. Capture noninterlaced MJPEG and produce a 352x288 PAL AVI. I can then feed this AVI directly into TMPGenc and encode as a VCD or usually an SVCD. TMPGenc never rejects it. More commonly I will firstly push it through Virtual Dub so that I can remove the station breaks, maybe add some filters, then frameserve it directly to TMPGenc. Again...no problems. SVCD (VBR) results are excellent, and you have to look closely at the TV to determine if it is a cable TV broadcast or SVCD playing

  4. ZenZen: Are you using the provided software from Matrox to capture the video, ie. the "Matrox PC-VCR remote"? And if so, you're saying you can use an mjpeg file directly from the Matrox software as input in tmpgenc? Which version of tmpgenc are you using? I currently have 2.57.

  5. Although the supplied Matrox software does work, I prefer to capture with AVI_IO from http://www.nct.ch/multimedia/avi_io/
Under MJPEG Settings I have CIF 352x288 selected, and MJPEG quality Medium. This gives a data rate of 720KB/sec @ 25 frames/sec (PAL).
Theres nothing much else I can say. AVI_IO produces any number of AVIs all 2.1Gb each (which equates to roughly 38 mins of video). And there is definately NO problem feeding these AVIs into TMPGenc. I use the latest version, but all previous versions worked fine also.

  6. Thanks ZenZen, I'm going to try using AVI-IO tonight. It looks like the solution I need. Funny thing, I don't know what I did, but I can now use a Matrox generated MJPEG file directly in TMPGEnC, without any preprocessing by VirtualDub. Hmmmm, I guess all the stars just finally lined up correctly for me.

I've been trying Vdub 1.4.9.2 w/vcr because I wanted the timer ability, but I can't get that version to work. It looses about 75% of the frames no mater what my settings are..... even if theyre the same as Vdub 1.4.1. hmmm, go figure.
