i have downloaded some svcds and they wont play do i need a codec and which 1 if i do?

You should try installing an MPEG2 codec. VCDs are MPEG1, SVCDs are MPEG2. Unless you use PowerDVD, WinDVD, or a hardware MPEG2 decoder, you are going to need the codec.
I use the Elecard MPEG2 codec, which is linked for download in the "Tools" section of this website.
