Why, when i try to turn an mpeg into a divx avi using virtualdub, does it not let me go above 56kBits/sec, 22050 hz if i use the mp3 compression? The Show All Formats box is checked, too.
Also, when i try using Divx audio, encoding starts but never gets to 1 percent done.
Is there another audio compression I can use?

You need to download a better MP3 codec. As I recall, the standard MP3 codec you get on Windows can only encode at low-quality. Go over to http://www.doom9.net/ and download the Radium MP3 codec and try again. I don't remember what name it uses, but you'll end up with more than one MP3 codec in the list. Just try them until you find the one that allows the high-quality rates.
