Here's the problem or how it started anyway. I need a good defragging tool for Windows98SE so I downloaded Norton Systemworks 2003 for its Speed Disk utility. During the installation everything went nice and smooth but then after the restart I was faced with a DOS blue screen of death saying that Norton Anti-Virus had caused an I/O error during a self-test boot scan. So after much hassle and various attempts to solve the problem I booted into safe mode and just uninstalled the whole Systemworks suite. Now I was able to get into windows but alas another problem was just around the corner. You see DOS had another suprise for me in stall this time popping up something like "Windows device failed to load. System.ini refers to this device in its file but can't be found blah blah blah, then the name of the file C:\Progra~1\Norton~1\savrt.vxd". Simple enough I thought, i would just edit the line out of the System.ini file and be done. But nothing is ever that simple is it,. I searched up and down for the reference to it in the system.ini file but couldnt for the life of me find one. So I thought of another soloution, make myself a dummy "savrt.vxd" file by renaming a text file. But that also didnt work and now I am stuck here.
As I said before I can get into Windows fine, just have to click a key and it will go through but the message is kind of annoying so I was wondering if anyone out there has any further suggestions about what to do. If possible could someone even send me (email address in my profile) a copy of their savrt.vxd file? It can be found in your Norton Systemworks file usually under Program Files. Much appreciated but I will take ANY suggestions.
Also does anyone know a good defrag program?
Thanks!
