  1. Is Divx Pro anywhere close to being a competitor of TMPGENC?
I ask because I went to the site, and the have claimed some pretty steep accomplishment as far as movie compression goes.
    Should I spend the $30?

Would anyone like to share with me? (I've never used Divx B4)

Divx is a codec for compression in avi files. TMPGenc encodes to mpeg1/mpeg2. They are for different purposes so you can't really compare them. Divx is typically a lot more compressed for the quality it delivers, but no set-top DVD player currently can play divx/avi files.

You do not need to buy Divx pro unless you need the "advanced" encoding options. The free version encodes and decodes just fine, but doesn't encode certain features that might make the video cleaner or smaller. I haven't tried the pro version, so I can't tell if the features are worth it.

You can start playing with the free one to get an idea if you like it. You can also try the pro version for free if you're willing to let it install spyware....

TMPG can also use the DivX codec. However, it is more usually used to create (S)VCD mpegs. If you want to create (S)VCD then go for TMPG. If you want to create DivX to get the highest quality possible (>100 minutes/80minCDR) then choose the latest version of DivX. However, you can currently only play DivX on your PC.
