dat files to mpg on a vcd

i have finally managed to download files and burn to vcd with nero. however, when I try and open the mpegav file, it always tries to open it as word or notepad and despite trying, i can't convert it to an mpg file. what am i doing wrong please?

Opening it as a notepad means you have .dat files associated with the notepad, delete the association folder > file types

Or hold left shift key when you right click on .dat file and select "Open with" and select media player, check the box to always associate.
