Is the ATI radeon install guide on this site for installing the card and getting it to produce MPEG2 files which are compliant with most packages? I dont understand why it is suggested the install be done this way and not using the cd software, but i guess there is some (important?) reason why it is?

because not every CD has the optimal driver/MMC combination. a lot of them are older, and contain drivers that have since been replaced or MMC 7.0. if you have the latest drivers, MMC 7.1, and the DVD 4.1 on your CD, (which most people don't), go ahead and use it.
