capturing stills

i can't take stills of mpeg2 using ati's media player, only the tv will catch stills so i have to act quick. the snapshot icon in MMC is greyed out most of the time but when it isn't and i click-it gives me an error and forces me to close.
so really what i am saying is: i can not playback a file and capture a picture. why is this? i used to be able to before i had driver problems and had to format. now i'm back using the same drivers (because 7.7.0.1 are the only one that work with my AIW 7500) --- but now i can't capture stills.
i thought there was a small chance it might be ati's program, so i tried extracting with ACDsee and had the same problem. the only way it would let me extract is if i extracted EVERY frame as a bitmap all at once.
anybody familiar with capturing stills from mp2?

a real easy way is to use wobble mpeg-vcr .. you can frame advance and hit the camera icon any time to save each frame to either bmp or jpeg .. or fast scroll through also
