Hi there,
I was wondering about something i was told in passing recently. Apparently there is some work around (cough-reghack-cough) to let Premiere use Avid's codec (instead of the default Windows one) when capturing in video. I'm ot sure if i've got these details correct, but if someone knows of how to do this, or something very similar i would be greatful to hear from them.
-Cheers

sure you can do this but unless your going to edit on an avid system there is no advantage and the quality is no better than say - huffyuv ,.. anyway avid systems dont do software cap'ng anyway but work with either a targa board or DPS or simular .. I use a lossless mjpeg on a reeltime board and have also the dll's so that someone could read these files on another machine .. but that cant help them in capturing ...

I see.....Yeah well there is Avid as well as premiere on the system - I am going between the two, but i figure if i can use the one codec for all files captured it would be easier. What I want to know is how do i choose/configure which codec premier is using to compress the video I am captuping in off my miniDV Deck. I can only choose the Microsoft DV (PAL) and i cannot configure it any further than that. Is there anything I can do to change this? Or am I simply just not making any sense?

As I understand it, Premiere (6.0+) has its own DV codec built in. I think this is needed to support the feature Premiere has where it only copies the compressed data when it is not modified, rather than going through an unnecessary decompression/compression cycle.

yes -- just start a new project using adobe DV template - otherwise you would be recompressing instead of copy as Xesdeeni says...
avid systems are a Hardware/software solution .... at least all the version i know about .. they comes with thier own hardware NLE capture and codecs and are not meant/ nor work well with adobe -- but installing lets say a targa 3000 or DPS card , they would come with plug-ins for adobe also .. as you see on the picture below ..

Avid copies its input from DV and uses the microsft one to decode its footage. The only codec used in AVID is the MJPEG one which is used for editing.
Theres a hack I found for replacing the Microsoft DV codec in premerie with the mainconcepts one. This operate fast and renders are beter but you have to swap back when you wish to output or input from tape. -
yeah hey ironwood, that's the sorta thing i was talking about, i found that mainconcept hack info, which also then allows you to use any number of codecs you have installed on the machine (including the Avid one if that's your case), but yeah so you have to actually capture it wrapped in the microsoft DV codec but then by removing the qcap.dll you can render effects etc using the codec of your choice? Is that corect, cause thats how i read it. this damn codec business gets to me... basically all i am trying to do is maintain the best possible level of image quality while working thru apps like premiere.
