I was playing with DVDx and while the overall process is easier, it does need a little work. That's not to say that DVDx isn't any good, just that there is room for improvement. The author should be commended for creating such a useful utility. I'd like to see some more work done in the NTSC disc area since I had a little problem getting a successful rip on my first try.

Sefy, your guide that VideoGuy referred to is practically "fool proof"... an outstanding job.

I've never been one for ripping (I prefer to capture and burn using the Dazzle DVC), but I have to admit that between your guide, and the new tools available, I have been reconsidering.

  7. Thanks! I appriciate that, i'm trying to work on another update, especialy on the encoding in two parts, as i've had complaints that it's confusing, so much for fool proof

Aggreed, Sefy's guide and templates are the way to go.
DVDx needs some refinement, generated various errors on several rip attempts using different DVD's.

  9. Well.. according to SlicknPick my Templates are nothing but trouble, so he wouldn't recommand using them

  10. DVDx 1.3 is an improvement on earlier versions (it supports the panasonic plugin), but it still needs work i think.

  11. Hi Sefy,
Found your guides on the Ripping thing and will give it a try this evening.... If your guides are as good as the TMP templates you made, then I think all my worries are solved!!

By the way, with your templates (PAL and NTSC Film which my Philips DVD can play no worries) I managed to fit VCD movies on a single 80 min CD and some of them are 1h40 Minutes!! The only thing I change to the setting is the Audio...usually set it 190 and the quality is hardly difference from a DVD!!!

Sorry, I know this is off topic, but I could not be bothered to write two posts!!

I used DVDx to rip my NTSC DVD of the Matrix to VCD and am very pleased with the results.

One problem I did get with the audio was when selecting audio I had 6 channel and 2 channel (listed twice) to choose from. I did a test with the first 2 channel and I go the director speaking!. So I did the film with 6 channel which in hindsight is for SVCD not VCD so when I put it into Nero it did not like the audio. I took the compliance off and burned it anyway and it plays fine on my Mico.

I also noticed the Matrix is done at 23.976 frames and not 29.97. I ripped at 23.976 because I have had problems with audio out of sync before with other programs when coverting to a different frame rate.

Would it have been ok at 29.97??

I have tried both methods. SmartRipper ->DVDx (1.3) and SmartRipper -> DVD2AVI -> TMPEGENC and I've discovered that I continually have audio sync problems with the DVDx approach. This is on 2 separate NTSC Region 1 discs. There is still a noticeable difference in video quality between the 2 approaches... DVDx being inferior.

What are others using to avoid the sync problem and to improve video quality?

    Thanks in advance.

  20. @Sefy

How about a guide to frameserving from DVDx 1.3 to Tmpgenc (my fave encoder), I couldn't get it to work! Glad to be of help with the link, by the way, although I visit other DVD/VCD sites, this is still my first choice (Ass kisser, me?, NO!)

  21. nazimm, thanks! and i'm glad to hear it went smooth! keep backing up your DVD's

mh2360, hmm.. well, right now I have no idea ho you frameserv from DVDx to TMPGEnc, and i've just finished re-writing my whole guides and combines them into one big one, which I can't figure out how to give to Baldrick yet

I'll look into your request and see what I can do, who knows, maybe in the next guide
