  1. Hi, I'm kinda new to all this so pardon me if this is already covered somwhere...
Anyways, I've ripped video off of DVDs and made a VCD with that newbie guide on this site, it worked I was happy ^_^ But now I want to be able to rip off that video and make it into a neat little file. I know you can make an AVI or MPG file with TMPGEnc, but my prob is the quality and config of the codecs. I dont want a 1gig file, i want to compress it with one of the codecs to around 200megs give or take.
What I'm asking is (1)what is the best codec to use? (2) What is the best config for that codec?
If anyone can offer advice (or better ideas) please reply ^_^

  4. DivX seems to be popular for lower quality movie encodes. I haven't tried it myself but using a low bitrate for audio and video when converting to DivX would give ya what ya want. Most of my stuff goes from .avi to VCD so I can watch them on a stand alone.
Take it easy. And if its easy take it twice.

If you want that kind of compression, use Divx. I personally prefer 5.0. You can get that by going to Divx.com and downloading The Playa (if that's what it's still called). The codec will automatically load into your system plus you get to enjoy the Divx movie with their skin. Watch out how you install these Divx codecs. It's a bit tricky if you don't do it in the correct order. If all you do is plan on using Divx 5.0, then great. But you better install the older Divx 3.11 first if you plan on continuing this path, and don't install the Divx 5.0 over again via Nimo codec pack.

As far as configuring it, do a 2 pass encoding, with bitrates between 800-2000. This is very general explanation, but the guides should help you on this site, or the site above. http://www.divx-digest.com/articles/divx5_setup.html can help you get a grasp of things.

    Good luck!!!!!

What you have to remember is..there is really no set rule when configering your codecs. Here is what I did to figure out my default usual settings for my templates for TmpGenc. I got a very small MPEG file and I converted it to an AVI using and experimenting with all the codecs I have and tried different settings and compared quality and sizes amongst all them. Here is the link to the file I use. It is only a 10mb mpeg but it's perfect for testing cuz it has sound, quality and the size creates very small outputs. http://briefcase.yahoo.com/bc/temporary_filez/lst?.dir=/&.src=bc&.view=l this is my briefcase at yahoo when you get there look at the "filez" folder.
