  1. I am currently using a Hitatchi 8x DVD player on my pc. It plays DVD's well , but hangs up or freezes when playing my svcd's. Those same svcd's play beautifully at any speed when played back on my stand alone $95.00 Magnavox DVD/SVCD player. I just bought a new video card the ATI 8500 Radeon, so I know my problem is not my video card. Also I'm using WinDVD 4 to play back my svcd's. Basically I was hoping someone might be able to tell me what a good DVD player for my PC is that will play SVCD's well? Any and all Recommendations will greatly be apprecaited. Thanks WILL

WinDVD is what I use, it plays dvds and svcds very well in my opinion. Are you not happy with it? I'm not sure I would recommend anything else over it. PowerDVD is good too, maybe even higher quality for DVDs but the two are probably pretty comparable overall.

I choose WinDVD over PowerDVD for svcds simply because it seems to be more consistent with my menu's, whereas with powerDVD it will often lock up or lead me to dead ends. Also WinDVD allows me to toggle the two audio tracks, not sure if PowerDVD can do that.

Before you spend any money on any other software players give SthDVD a chance. Its free and it may be the best SVCD playing software, commercial or otherwise. Of course it also does a decent job with dvd as well.

Do you have a second CD-ROM CD-BURNER in your machine? You don't need a DVD-ROM to play Svcd's.

Any cd-rom or dvd-rom should be equally good at playing svcds, as far as its concerned its just data it doesnt matter what standerdized format it falls under. Pioneers make good solid dvd-roms though so I can recommend those.

  7. Adam thanks for the response. I'll look into a Pionneer unit. Maybe you can recommend a model number? The picture quality I have been getting from the svcd has been awesome. I'd have to say I can't tell much of a difference if any from the DVD. Thanks Again ,Will
