  1. HP dvd100i or HPdvd200i, the only difference between the 2 is the fact that the newer modle(dvd200i) can record on dvd+r and the older model is about 200.00 less.

    Is dvd+r better than dvd-r?

HP to offer trade-in for DVD+RW drives
4:10 PM, Monday, April 15, 2002 by Graeme Bennett.
If you've been following the plight of the HP dvd100i owners who were promised DVD+R support via a free firmware upgrade that never materialized, there's a new twist. In case you haven't been following this story, here's a little background:

In mid-2001, the DVD+RW Alliance website said, "DVD+RW will support the write-once capability, DVD+R... With a few simple clicks, consumers will be able to add DVD+R capabilities to their DVD+RW drives. Philips and HP will make the DVD+R software upgrade available this fall."

Until this week, it looked as though these early promises were nothing more than wishful thinking. HP, in Sept. 2001, changed its website to read: "HP has released the HP DVD100i with write-support for DVD+RW media only. Write-support for DVD+R media is neither planned nor technically feasible for the HP DVD100i model."

It wasn't until consumer complaints (many of whom reminded HP to the statements referred to in our articles) reached a fever pitch over the past few weeks that HP decided to offer customers of the dvd100i a trade-in option. For US$99, dvd100i buyers can upgrade to the dvd200, with DVD+R compatibility.

While this buy-back policy is certainly better than its previous "too bad, Charley" stance, it still amounts to a broken promise, and that has left some purchasers understandably steamed.

Prior to this week's announcement, HP had stated that it did not plan to offer a trade-in program to support those that purchased the DVD100i in spite of its decision to not offer a firmware upgrade for the drives. Calls and emails to HP earlier this year were unrewarding, although some users were reporting "unofficial" buy-backs by HP prior to this week's announcement. One PC Buyer's Guide reader called HP in March, but was told that no buy-back program was in place or was planned to be offered.

He, like many other dvd100i owners who have expressed their frustrations on the DVD+RW user forum at http://www.dvdplusrw.org, felt that HP had misrepresented their product and misled consumers.

While a US$99 trade-in program is not unreasonable, considering the rapid rate of obsolescence in the electronics industry, it is too bad that HP did not fulfill its prior commitment to support consumers of the first-release HP drive. For some consumers, that hundred dollars represents a broken promise -- and they're likely to remember that the next time they are considering any HP product. Read more....
