  1. When encoding using the VBR method in TMPGe, what is the maximum bitrate you should enter?

At the moment I use Min 1150, Max 2250, and the average as high as possible when creating 2 disc VCD's (PAL). 1 Disc Template used as per the tutorial on this site and with the motion detection set to high quality.

I had some problems when i increaded the Max Bitrate to 4250. The sound (224) hesitated/paused when there was alot of action and a lot of music. It was only just noticable, but annoying. The problem is only evident on my standalone DVD player and not when it is played on the PC.

Since then I have reinstalled CLADDVD, TMPGe and VCDEasy as i thought that the sound problem maybe a software problem.

    Any thoughts?

no -- you went to high a bit rate for svcd for your player .. and since you are doing vcd's (i think) - you are way over the max bit rate for compliant vcd

  3. Does anybody know what the recommended Max Bitrate is for VCD's?

    It depends on the target

    SVCD,VCD etc

When you are setting your Min Max & Average parameters, take in to consideration this simple Bits per pixel Example for SVCD, CVD etc
    • PAL Res F/R Pixels/s Relative to DVD

      DVD 720x576 x25 =10368000 100.00%
      SVCD 480x576 x25 =6912000 66.67%
      CVCD 352x576 x25 =5068800 48.89%
If for example DVD uses 5.0 mbit/s then a CVCD only needs 2.5 mbit/s to match DVD in pixels/sec.

For example a DVD with a Bitrate of 5mbit as source, and you wanted to make a CVD you could use 300 min 2000 av and 2500 max, not a recomendation just an example.
You need to play around with the values to suit yourself & DVD player.

    cheers

The MAXIMUM bitrate (in fact, the ONLY bitrate) for VCD is 1150kbps. Unless, of course, you want to violate the spec, then you are on your own.
