  1. I'm trying to follow the guides (3 so far) to copy a DVD to a DVD, this is no surprise, TOUGH. I have yet to copy ONE DVD usaing the guides I have found. I'm not stupid, I have been known to follow direction from time to time, but dam, is there no better way to do this than copying 5 pages of print that may or may not (not in my case) solve my problem? I sware, I have followed these directions to a T, but there are variables that don't pertain to my movie (Iv'e tried 3) and then its bedlam. Is there a step by step (more so then the ones Iv'e seen?) I'm havin fun, but would love to make headway. Now I know alot of you wil want specificfs, and what you did at what time etc. (afair questions) just know that I tried and failed using the existing faqs, Dam. Oh well, I will plunder on, and get lucky eventually, but if there is a newbie outhere who has had luck with a guide, please let me know. Thanks

I have no experience with ripping DVDs; my experience (and that is somewhat limited) is with taking home movies (on VHS-C) and burning them to VCD. I'll see if I can help what I can, and I'm sure the other users of this forum would too (they seem to be a friendly lot); but some specifics about the kind of problem(s) you are having would help us a great deal in helping you out. Please be more specific as to the kinds of problems you are having...

@ultralight - I admit, it can be daunting to use 5-6 programs to rip DVDs and reencode them. If you are looking for a simple way to do this I would suggest heading over to doom9.net and getting DVD2SVCD. Never used it, but supposedly it automates this whole thing of ripping and whatnot...good luck
    End of Line.

  4. what guide did you follow? I think sefy's guide is the easiest one and very simple to follow.

    Only 3 different software
    1. Smart ripper to rip Vob files ( this one not so many setting involve)
    2. DVD2avi this one to prepare or frameserve to TMPGEnc. (this one need only video setting and audio setting)
3.TMPGEnc to encode "d2v" and "wav" file from dvd2avi. (this one might be a bit hard to remember but just use default template for what format you have in DVD such as PAL or NTSC)

I know it's easier to type than do a real thing but I have success with his guide.

Your overcomplicating this. I had the same problem on my first DVD - DVDR project. The guides over at Doom seem to be a little more helpful in this area (sorry guys). www.doom9.org

Use any ripper of your choice (SmartRipper is a good one to start with) to grab the main movie files. When your done, you should have ONLY the main movie files, consisting of .VOB .IFO, and .BUP files.

NOTE: If your source DVD disk is not dual layer and your files are less than 4.3GB, you can stop at this point, and simply burn your files using something like NERO.

If the ripped files are larger than 4.3GB:
Open the IFO's with the OPEN button in IFOEdit, and strip out all of the streams that are not needed for your movie (copyrights, trailers, etc). You do this using the "Create IFO's" button. There is an IFOEdit guide on doom9 as well if you need details. Make sure you select "create new IFO's", and "Strip Streams". That will bring you to a picklist, listing all of the available video and audio tracks. You only need one of each. It sounds complicated, but it's not that bad. The streams are typically clearly marked (english, french, etc). You usually only need the primary video track, and one audio track. Check those off, and leave the rest unchecked, and click the StripIT button. This will create the trimmed down VOB's, and IFO's with just your main move.

That will leave you with a filelist that should look something like this (example only):

    VIDEO_TS.IFO
    VIDEO_TS.BUP
    VTS_01_0.IFO
    VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.VOB (this is usually the menu for the main movie)
VTS_01_1.VOB (the ones after that are the pieces of the main move)
    VTS_01_2.VOB
    VTS_01_3.VOB
    VTS_01_4.VOB (you get the point)

Next in IFOEdit, click the GetVTSSectors button. This will scan for any changes in your timeline for the pieces you've removed, and save the new IFO, and BUP files.

Last but not least, hit the DVD Play button to make sure you movie works.

There are a ton of options and items I've left out, but these are the basics to getting a movie from point A to point B.
