Hey!
I've been capturing a little in VirtualDub lately. and can reproduce 1
problem without fail.
I capture in VirtualDub, using Huffyuv 2.1.1, @720x576 resolution, on
a 7200rpm seagate barracuda 80 gig drive (I have an athlon xp 1600).
and use the btwincap drivers.
it captures fine, i don't drop any frames, yet, i see odd random white
lines during black scenes, red scenes, scenes with little movement
etc.
It captures interlaced, which i dont' mind, and PowerDVD seems to be
able to fix it up when i encode it to an mpeg-2 file, but it still
leaves these white random lines in it - even after Virtualdub has de-interlaced it.
(For an example, goto http://members.dodo.com.au/~glendv/jimi.jpg (you
can see it next to jimmi hendrix's nose) - there was absolutely no
movement where the white line is.
Another expample - showing it to some degree is http://members.dodo.com.au/~glendv/early1.jpg
does anyone know how to remove these white random lines?
I've updated to the latest btwincap drivers, the lastest version of VirtualDub, and stil have this problem. i've even switched capture programs. The second example I've posted is done using AVI IO.
I don't know if this is an interlacing problem - i have used both Field A and Firld B options in TMPGEnc and it's made very little difference.
In Paint Shop Pro, you can de-interlace it, using the even field (on the 2nd pic I've linked to), and it will hide most of the problems up the top, but still give a problem down the bottom.
I don't think these are interlacing lines though, as some of the time it'll show up where there isn't any movement.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks, and Cheers!
Glen.

reduce you capturing frame size, might work, cuase i get that when i capture at hight fram sizes.

Those lines are definitely not interlacing artifacts. I am assuming you're capturing from VHS tapes. They maybe a result of some scratches on the tape or VCR head. If you play tapes on TV and you see those lines, it's a problem of the tape. Unfortunately, I don't know how to deal with it.

It could also be corruption on the PCI bus. Do you have the most up-to-date drivers? Those VIA drivers can be a real pain.

I get this exact same problem with the btwincap drivers at high resolutions...with Satellite, LD, VHS....so this is NOT a VHS thing....
gonna do some test captures and post my pictures for proof...
@athrak - mine look EXACTLY like yours
I have posted this issue on this board twice with no help...but I want to get to the bottom of it...End of Line. -
Thanks for the tips.
I'm hoping to capture in 720x576 for the simple reason i want to convert these to PAL DVDs afterwards... and Pal dvds are at 720x576, 25fps.
I'm capturing it from Satellite TV service. I see none of these problems on the TV.
I use Ulead Media Studio 6.5 to capture straight to Mpeg-2, at 620x576/25fps and see none of these problems, so i don't think it's a problem with the PCI bus... but I'll look into that. Thanks.
I also see it when using mjpeg to capture in...
I'm come to the conclusion it's not a tmpgenc problem, with me not knowing what I'm doing..
I've upgraded the video capture drivers (foubnd at http://btwincap.sourceforge.net ), I've downgraded them, I've upgraded my version of virtualdub, even downgraded it, and can't find a combination that works.
I have an Athlon XP 1700, so i don't think it's a speed issue (but might be for all i know)... I'll update the VIA 4in1 Driver anyway.
Thanks! -
alright, athrak...here are my shots...
this is from VHS...
--edited/webserver off line
as you can see, I lied a little bit...it looks the same to me...but this is the first time I have ever seen them turn green...
and this is from LD...
--edited/webserver off line
This is more like what I have seen in the past. If you can't see that well look here...this is an 800x800 picture, so I didn't want it taking up the whole post:
--edited/webserver off line
Now this is NOT interlacing...a weird problem....End of Line. -
Both people reporting problems are AMD users ( lucky guess they both have VIA chipsets ). Problems are more likley to occur with the bus maxed out, both incomming AND outgoing. You may not have the same problems on mpeg-2 capture because the disk activity would be gretly reduced over mjpeg or huffyuv capture.
I vaugley remeber similar problems back in the days where it's the HD or SB live ( tying up the bus ) that either causes a delay ( streaks ) or corruption ( green ) in the captured images.
So do something with alot of disk activity ( largest cap + most uncomressed you can get even if it drops a frame from time to time ) and see if it happens more often, then do the same with the same resolution and a higher comression codec.
