  1. Hi all,
is there an acm codec for mpg video anywhere? All the ones i've come across (LSX, TMPG etc) are standalone apps, whereas i need something that can be called from other apps (like when you select a codec in Vdub). Since divx installs as an ACM i was thinking there must surely be a similar installation for mpeg1 and/or mpeg2 available ....

    thanks for any help

  2. ACM = audio compression manager

The audio part of DIVX is mp3 (just as other music files) which is an ACM (the mp3-file gets a header which disguises it as WAV or AVI)

The video part of DIVX produces an AVI (even it is a mpeg4 "inside")-this is the only type such a codec can make and one of the reasons the mpg-programs are standalone.

  3. heh! thanks for that ...

i suppose the next question would be, if you can encode mpeg4 video, stick 'avi' on the end and play it back though a codec (divx, xvid etc) that understands the contents, how come you can't do the same for mpeg1 and mpeg2? It must be possible at least, even if it hasn't been done yet.
