  1. Leebear,
I was lucky to actually have the exact spiderman movie that you demonstrated your conversion with, but now as it is time for me to convert other movies - I do not have the luxury of your step-by-step guide. I have converted about 3 movies (successfully) after the spiderman, and have had no problems with them. However (isn't there always a however), recently I have converted 3 movies and each of them have had problems. I am beginning to become confused, the files are too big to put on the CDs (which I do not understand why, because in TMPEnc I set my files to fit on 80 min cds). Also, I can sometimes burn a file which is 795 mb, but when the file is (say) 715 I cannot burn it and have to cut it to about 695. This is becoming frustrating. My primary concern is this:
I got Harry Potter 2 on 2 CDs (in AVI format). I converted the first CD with no problem (following your guide), then I went on to CD 2. This CD was ended up with 2 muxed files instead of 1. CD1 and CD2 were the same size, but yet CD2 ended up with 2 muxed files (which were too big to fit on CDs) - Therefore I ended up wtih 3 CDs, and am now trying to chop the credits off the last file so I can fit it on a disk. The 2 muxed files from CD2 ended up about 695 Mb (fit on cd) and 735 mb (did not fit on CD). This is odd because my mpg file that was muxed from CD1 was 776 mb, and it fit on a CD fine.
PLEASE help, please, I need help. Take care, and Merry Christmas!!

    Offel,

I am kind of new to this stuff but I just managed to convert my first Xvid to SVCD (thanks to Leebear's excellent guide!) AND I managed to add subtitles. I downloaded the subtitles in *.SRT format and added them to the movie using Avisynth and VirtualDub. Download both and install them both, start up VirtualDub and go to Video, Filters and add the VobSub or TextSub (depending on the format) and configure it. There is a pretty good guide in the 'EDIT' section of VCDHELP btw....

  3. As I said in my last post, I am new to this stuff so of course I found an easier way to add subtitles. Instead of adding the subtitles with VirtualDub and the subtitle plugin use a simple avisynth script which you can add to the dvd2svcd.ini so the subtitles will be added during the conversion.

Make sure you have got Avisynth and Vobsub installed before you add the following entry to your dvd2svcd.ini:

[AVISYNTH_BiCubicResize With forced subs for AVI]
    0=BicubicResize(^TargetWidth,^TargetHeight,^b_valu e,^c_value)
    1=AddBorders(0,^BorderTop,0,^BorderBottom)
    2=LoadPlugin(!TextSub.vdf)
    3=textsub(!file.ssa)
    ^b_value=0
    ^c_value=0.6
    !TextSub.vdf=C:\Program Files\Gabest\VobSub\textsub.vdf
    !file.ssa=

Now in dvd2Svcd go to the Frameserver tab and choose BiCubicResize with forced subs for AVI in the field Avisynth setup. Scroll down the Avisynth command table and click on the parameters button on the line TextSub. Browse to your subtitle file and your ready to roll...

I don't have to tell you that there are litteraly dozens of methods and possibilities to accomplish things so if I gave some wrong directions here I apologize and I hope anyone can correct me. Anyway, the above method worked fine for me....

  4. I want to convert a Divx with VBR-audio with this guide, however, when I split the .avi in VirtualDub (to get a split where I want it, instead of letting the program do it) I get 2 parts which have asynchronious sound (part 1 ± 1sec, part 2 ± 9sec off).

How can I correct this and/or still use the method described in this guide?

  5. No succes with any method I found 2 correct the soundsync problem. I downloaded another version of this movie in which (thru testing a short piece) there is no syncproblem, however I get this errormessage when CCE is doing it´s work:

    What´s wrong?

There are no bad frames reported by Virtualdub, and I tried this manual from the beginning. Btw, CCE continues with encoding...

  6. Just wanted to say thanks for one of the most easiest guides ive read. Ive been previously using tmpgenc to encode my avi's>(s)vcd with not too fantastic results. But after using the progs in this guide i have created a couple of perfect svcds with no problems at all.
    many thanks

  7. Thats nice

Regarding the problems I´ve described above:

The error with CCE didn´t go away, so I decoded this particular movie with DVD2SCVD and TMPGenc, which produced at highest quality settings a quite good SVCD.

Indeed, when there are no problems with the video file I´d rather use CCE and this guide

I wanted to download the "nino codec pack" but for some reason the link in tools section is sending me to a wrong page. Can anyone tell me where to download the nino codec pack? thanks

  9. For some reason, when i try to use dvd2svcd and i try to choose the .avi file for it to convert to mpeg-2, it tells me that the dvd2svcd file was not found. I followed the guide correctly up to this point and now have no idea what to do.

  10. in my last post i meant dvd2avi, not dvd2svcd, so when i pick the .avi file, it says that the dvd2avi file was not found.

  11. Hi nice guide.

    1 question:

Everything goes fine, but when i want to look at the movie after it's converted to a mpg file i see that all colours go purple , anyone knows why?

    hope you do.

  12. Hey all,
First, Great job on the guide Leebear...It introduced me to this program which has been the best I've found.
Second, I have a question. I encode .Avi files a lot and sometimes when I have a movie that is around 1hr 40 min it comes out fine with 2 cds at 800 mb just like i have the bitrate tab set for. But sometimes I'll get a third .mpg or .bin file that has about 30 seconds of the movie and then the credits. I've encoded the same movie 4 times trying to fix this each time tweeking the bitrate setting on how many cds to use for the link of my movie. I always get the same result. What am I doing wrong.

  13. Leebear

While I have been using DVD2SVCD for some time with DVD's I recently ran across you fine quide and decided to convert some DIVX to SVCD. On a couple of my DIVX files the frame rate is 29.971 (compared to the standard 29.970). Using all the techniques in your guide I processed the files. When finished the video was fine but there was no audio present on the finished SVCD file even though the AVI from virtual Dub played fine.

I redid everything again within VDub but under "Video\Framerate" I changed the rate to 29.970 and saved. When processed with DVD2SVCD the video and sound where fine but after a while the audio went way out of sync.

When I process a Divx with a standard framerate 25, 29.970 things work and play fine.

It's hard to believe that a 0.001 difference in frame rate can cause so much of a problem.

Is there a way to adjust the frame rate from 29.971 to 29.970 without lossing sync? Cannot seem to find anything in the guides or on the forums. Do you have anyother thoughts or suggestions on what I can do?

Thanks again for all the effort that went into your fine guide.

  14. Kudos to Leebear for a well written and thorough tut!

About the Bitrate tab in DVD2SVCD: I have it set to 1 740/1 740/2 740/2 740/3 740/3 740. The file I'm splitting is 100 mins long (1.49 GB), so I was expecting the first 76 mins in 740 MBs and then the remaining 24MBs in a smaller piece. Instead I got a 61 mins part and no part 2.

Can anybody explain what I am doing wrong ? Thanks!

  15. Hi!

    I need some help!

I have two DivX Files (Same Video, different Audio languages).

I want two create a S-VCD with these two languages!

    I wanna try this:
Extract the Audio with VirtualDub as WAVE Files.
Add these two Audio Streams to the AVI (DivX) File.
Open with DVD2SVCD (AVI2SVCD) and convert it with these two languages.

How do I add a second audio Stream to an AVI File and does DVD2SVCD accepts this?

    Thanx for your help!

  17. Hi there LeeBear !
    I have couple of questions.
Is there a way to disable creating of vaf (video info)file?
Seems that who deal next with coding is BBmpeg, and BBmpeg dosnt required vaf file...will safe a lof of time in encoding.

And is there any difference if source file are XviD 640x272 or 560x240 or anything else when u use DVD2SVCD?

    Thanks for anything !

  18. (PLEASE SOMEONE TAKE THE TIME TO READ THIS).
I have wot I think is a new method for correcting framerate to match audio while encoding using this guide as my main guide, I've explained rougly wot I did and could someone tell me if this is a practised method of correcting frame rate to match audio when converting to SVCD, as I have'nt seen this method in any of the guides and I really just came across it by accident, but think it could be really usefull to others for correcting this problem, I did try both the methods you guys suggested, but with little success (I put this down to me as I'm still a little of a noob at this).
Anyway, I'm a big fan of "DVD2SVCD" for converting cos it does most of the setting up for you when converting AVI2(S)VCD, and if you use "DiVX (AVI) to (S)VCD using DVD2SVCD - By: LeeBear - ver. 1.0", you can't really go wrong (A really good guide for noobs), and the end results are excellent quality.
The trouble is this guide is of little use if your source avi is of a different framerate to the end product you want (I wanted to convert my avi which was at 23.976fps to PAL SVCD 25fps), my problem was made still worse by the slightly off framerate of my avi (23.9768) .
How I got over this was by using "BeSweetGUI" and "2Lame" software, I knew that the DVD2SVCD bundle used this software, but I have know idea how to edit command lines, I then ran the convertion the way LeeBear's guide tells you to and had the "Movie" folder open in the DVD2SVCD directory so I could see the files that were created by "BeSweet" as it did its job, I was then able to use the GUI to point to the "Input" and "Output" files for BeSweet and "2Lame" to these file that were created, once I had this set up I ran DVD2SVCD's process again and it still seemed to work fine, the only difference was I had managed to get some control over this part of the process.
Then I started playing with the settings in BeSweetGUI, and it only took about 1 hour to become reasonably familier with the settings that really mattered, I noticed while playing about with it that in the "2Lame" section of BeSweet you could make the framerate of the output file different to the input file, so I put in my avi value of 23.9768fps as the input value, and 25fps as the output file rate.
I then ran the whole process from AVI2SVCD, as instructed by LeeBears guide, I did'nt hold much hope out that this would actually as most of what I had done was guess work on my part .
But to my utter astonishment the Mpeg I ended up with was perfectly in sync , so I tried it on another 23.976fps avi I have and that was fine aswell, I know some of you out there proberly have a hundred different ways of doing what I explained above, but I think this method would benifit poeple like me that know a little, but arn't experts at convertion and encoding, and this method can be used alongside LeeBears guide.
Would one of you guys tell me if this method is new and worth attempting to write a more detailed guide for (I may need some help with that if it comes to it ), or have I just stumbled on an already well used method, or worse still, am I making a meal of something that could be done far easier another way.

  20. Hi, Leebear. Like so many others, I just want to thank you for your very thoughtful guide. It helped me to make sense out of some things that I just couldn't get a handle on before. The photos of the different aspect ratios were particularly helpful, as was your choice to focus on the avi prep FIRST. I wish I had read your guide before I wasted 12 hours on a file that had an undetected code error near the end; that was one lesson I had to learn the hard way andI know how valuable that advice is.

So, in appreciation, I thought I'd share some small ideas that hopefully will be welcome additions to your guide. The original Divx Avi that I was using as the source for this project had keys set a little too far apart to allow me to get the hand mid cut where I wanted it. The scene changes weren't that well laid out, and so what I did, AFTER first checking to see that there were no unreadable errors this time, was re-code the film from with much smaller spacing for the keys. The net result was that it enabled me to cut the 1st half exactly where I wanted it. So I thought that might help some folks if they were having problems getting their edits where they wanted them. Compared to the actual CCE or TMPGEnc processing, it really didn't take that long. (I'm amazed that I'm actually getting USED to 8+ hours processing.)

Also, somewhat related, there is an option in DVDSVCD/AVISVCD that allows folks to save their source files. I guess you can always work back from the burned MPEG-2's, but, again, it might help some people to check "Don't Delete Files" on the Misc tab, depending on how comfortable they are with the results they're getting.

These are admittedly pretty minor things, but since everything you already posted worked for me, this was all I could think of; there really wasn't that much left to question or add to. But I still hope this input might be helpful to some folks.

    Thanks again.

Here is a copy/paste from LeeBear's response, found on page 1 of this thread:

"bruzer: I think I figured out your problem with the greyed out "convert DivX3 do DivX4". Do you have DivX5 installed on your computer? If so it takes over DivX3 and 4 playback that's why the option is greyed out. If you install the Nimo Codec pack you have to do a custom installation and make sure you have DivX3 and DivX4 choosen to be installed. I don't think it's installed by default. "

Additionally, I'm not positive if it was the Nimo pack or the Tsunami pack or even the Divx 5 bundle, but one of them asks - when using the custom install option - if you want Divx 5 to take control of ALL the different calls that can otherwise be handled by 3 and/or 4, or not. I never knew why that would even be an issue, until I saw the discussion about that particular check box.

Finally, I can only say that I have Divx 5.0.5 installed on my system, along with 3 and 4, and the box is not grayed out. But I've had so many installs/reinstalls, I honestly don't remember whether I did or didn't check that box allowing 3 and 4 to answer their own calls.

  23. NOTE: A possible limited workaround for those wanting to run at least one more avi without dealing with batch files, etc. I was curious to see if multiple versions of this program could run at the same time. I was able to open up two, one that was loaded with my Disk 2 avi and about to run - as soon as I finish this - and one that was empty. I myself don't do much with scheduled tasks, but it would seem to me that if one wanted to at least run one more avi file, and had some decent estimate of when the currently running one would or should be done, I guess the other open AVI2SVCD could be loaded with another avi and scheduled to start up at a pre-set time.

Maybe it's late, and I should leave the expert advice to the experts; but to my way of thinking, muddled as it is, this was at least a possible solution, so take it for whatever it's worth.

  26. Hi Lee!

I'm a new player in the the field of video conversions. I read your manual carefully and followed your instructions. The first conversion was a success only the movie came out "flat" (I probably shouldn't encode it with borders added...). But when I tried to encode as 4:3 with no borders or when I tried to letterbox the movie myself the program always crashed in some point (usually after the audio encoding).I read the letterboxing instructions very carefully and calculated everthing well, but that didn't help. So basicly what I am asking: If a movie is played on my computers already with those "borders" (widescreen...?) how should I encode it?
I tried so many times and nothing works - please relate to my question!
    Thanks'

  28. Hi LeeBear,

I've followed your guide to try convert my .avi file to MPEG2 but failed. Problem description as below:

    https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=675434#675434

Could you suggest how to approach the problem ?

Besides, it seems that the conversion didn't return normal as Cinema Craft Encoder SP being called at the last step i.e. Cinema Craft Encdoer SP window kept on display but it didn't tell me when the conversion completes.

The converted video file is only 140KB although the original .AVI file is over 2MB size.

  30. Hi....Been reading all this guide and it's just great. Been following from A to Z while converting a movie and it worked just fine. Except that the audio was a little delayed...Don't know why. Maybe you should have said something about using more languages (audio files) and how to add them to the ripping, for example, french and english and where and how we can get them. And also how to subtitle the whole thing...I wish I knew how to handle these steps.

    Thanks....Hooky
