Hi, I have just used nero for the first time. It was recommended as an easy program to use for changing downloaded avi's to vcd.
Before using this program I looked around here to learn how to convert avi's but was lost right away. Too many steps in the process ( it may really be easy but in reading about it I was lost).
So, I am using nero 5.5.9.0 and I used a Pengo cd-rw 650mb disc.
My dvd player is a panasonic sa-dk10. The manual says it will play vcd.
I burned 3 small avi files with nero using the vcd process. When I try playing the disc in my dvd player I can see the thumbnails for the shows. But the thumbnails are upside down. When I try to play, nothing happens. Skip and fast forward have no results either.
Is nero really an all in one program or am I missing something?
Any help will be apreciated.
PS. you may see this posted twice, but I think I messed up the first time.

as a newbie, all that can be suggested to you is 3 things, READ, READ, READ. Making vcd's is a little more complex than what you think!!
Good Luck!!"The software said Win XP or better, so I Installed Linux" -
Take the advice given by lpn1160 and read. Good starting points are the how-to sections and previous posts in this newbie forum.
Just so you know, having Nero convert your AVI files to VCD format is a mistake. You're much better off using tmpgenc to create your VCD-compliant mpeg and then feeding that into nero.Live every day to the fullest as if it is your last, because someday it will be. -
To convert with encoder software not that difficult. You might have been reading too much now. So my suggestion is stop reading for awhile and start the real thing.
First, go get TMPGEnc (if you don't have one)
Second, print out conversion guide (convert avi to vcd with TMPGEnc)
Third, Load your avi file into TMPGEnc
Forth, Load template (PAL, NTSC)
Fifth, burn with NERO (for the sake of simply)
Last, enjoy your movie.
Okay, it sounds like easy, eh?but you might encounter one or more probelms on the way. Don't panic come back and post your question (after you read the guide). Someone here will help you out and this way you can learn new proggie.
Nero, yes it's easy, like one step encoding and burnning, but it's been shown a lot of problems in this forum. My believe is to deal with new software is easier than dealing with problems.
PS. Just read won't help if you won't START. -
Thanks for the responses.
ya_jai your basic instructions were very helpful and just what somebody like me needs to get started. Specific instructions with minimal steps to give us our first success, so we feel comfortable beginning with the more complex albeit superior processes available.
I haven't had a full success yet so let me fill you in.
I used the TMPGEnc program to convert the avi which doubled the file size and changed it to an mpeg. I am assuming this is normal but mentioning it in case I'm wrong. I received no error reports of any kind during the process.
Then I used nero to burn the movie to cd. Again, everything seemed to go alright.
The result was that when Trying to play the cd in my dvd player, I got the screen with the thumbnail( this time right side up, so I know I'm making progress. lol) and the "created with nero" statement on the bottom of the screen. But pushing play, fast forward or skip does nothing.
I have read the guide and belive I have done everything right, but now I need to figure out how to get the movie to play.
Thanks in advance

Hurray!!!
It was successful after all.The problem was my dvd player. In order to start vcd's on my player I needed to enter the number of the show on the screen, not push play.
If anyone is having a simmilar problem playing a vcd, try pushing the item # on your remote control before re-burning the file to see if that works.
Thanks again, and as I said, the basic instructions were very helpful. -
I'm glad, it works for you.
Okay new you might have to go next step further. If nero give you a problem such as up side down when push play (which is not supposed to). You might try to create bin/cue file first and burn bin/cue (image) file with maybe Nero, or Cdrwin or Burnatonce(This is I use all the time and FREE). Download VCDeasy or TSCV which is GUI of vcdimager, then create bin/cue file from that software. With these 2 software you can get Menu and Chapters to work with your VCD as well. Look for a guide in this forum.
