Ok, I capture with VirutalDub and I get slight noise along the bottom of the screen - we're talkin' 15 year old VHS tapes here so no suprise there. I want to crop that stuff out, which I can do in VirtualDub, but it appears to reduce the vertical resolution of the capture, which I don't want. I want to replace the cropped area with a black band. How can I do this? If not in VirtualDub, which app do I need?

  2. Add a smart resize filter (you don't have to resize if you don't want to). Then in the filters window, click on Cropping. Change the Y2 Offset to 8.

This will crop out the line and resize the video to fit the window.

ok, bbb you said there was no reason to resize then went through the resize process. I will give the "no resize" option (which I use ):

I would suggest using the fill filter in VDub (or Crop and AddBorder in AVISynth)-go to filters, select fill and set the Y2 offset to 8 (or 12-whatever...)-the default color is black-it just fills in the bottom 8 lines of tracking information with black...and no resize needed, and your resolution stays compliant(if it was compliant to begin with, of course). I have done this on all of my VHS tapes and they look wonderful.
    End of Line.
