I am just getting started in this and want to convert a pile of VHS and Hi-8 tapes to VCD or DVD.
The Canopus ADVC line seems to be the ticket.
Which is better? The ADVC-100 or the ADVC-1394?
I am leaning towards the ADVC-1394 because I don't have a firewire card and don't have any software right this second for video editing.
What do you think?
Thanks!

they are basicly the same thing except for the external box as you noticed - you need a firewire card , though even a good one is pretty cheap ..

I guess my next question is, why is the ADVC-100 more money than the 1394?
What makes it better? -
in reality - the box and cable costs more than the parts inside ... plus it has a few extra parts that are needed as a stand alone
