  1. I'm trying to convert a RAW AVI file size 150Mb, to a 720 x 576 MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 movie using TMPGEnc.

I have managed to create VCD and a Super VCD CDs using the same AVI file above converted to MPEG using TMPGEnc and then burned using Nero V5.5 to play on my new Toshiba SD-210E DVD Player. The VCD and Super VCD worked first time using the standard TMPGEnc templates. But I really want to play XVCD 720 x 576 movies on my Toshiba, which reading from reviews it apparently can.

I think the problem is to do with my TMPGEnc MPEG Settings I use currently using:

    Stream type: MPEG-1 Video
    Size: 720 x 576
Aspect Ratio: 4:3 625 line (PAL)
    Frame rate: 25 fps
Rate control mode: Constant bitrate (CBR)
    Bit rate: 9800
VBV buffer size: 0 automatic <---- dulled down

    everything else is dulled until......

Motion search precision: High quality (slow)

The file produced from these settings and burnt onto a CD using Nero V5.5 does play, but the movie image is practically unrecognizable!

Does anyone have a XVCD 720 x 576 TMPGEnc template I could use which works ? or any suggestions what settings I should have.

Finally, What is the purpose of the bitrate calculator?

    Any help much appreciated.

    Thanks

    Mike

  2. Drop that bitrate a whole lot! 9800 kbps CBR will choke almost any MPEG1 decoder in a standalone player...mine turned video into a slideshow at 4600 Kbps, much less 9800. If you want those kind of bitrates, encode it as MPEG2 VBR, otherwise keep the bitrate below 3000 Kbps, 2000 to be really safe.

  3. The purpose of the bitrate calculator is to determine the max bitrate you can use to fit the file on a cd (s).
