Im converting a divx to mpeg2 at dvd standard with Tmpgenc, I know i have to use 3:2 pull down under the video options when using the Project wizard as it wont let me change this , there are no other options in the box, i Guess this is so my stand alone player will be able to play it. as the sourse is 23.976 fps and it needs to be 29 fp. But what i need to know is do i also need to select the 3:2 pull down option under the advanced tab aswell , I think this will actually convert the film rather than tell the player to convert just for play back. or will this screw things up

Thanks BJ_M , do u mean dont tick the box in advanced tab ? for 3:2 p/d
-
When previewing with the 3:2 pulldown option , it never looks interlaced. Why is this?
-
Because it isn't interlaced. The 3:2 pulldown tells the dvd player to do a telecine as it plays, then it becomes interlaced.

Can anyone tell me when u would use the 3:2 pulldown in the avanced tab rather than the one under the video tab ?

If you had 23.976fps encoded video and you wanted to hard telecine it to 29.97fps then you would use that option in the advanced tab.
By hard telecine I mean physically converting the framerate to 29.97fps, as opposed to letting the player do the conversion during playback.
As far as when you would want to do that? Well for svcds never since all svcd compatible dvd players properly support ntscfilm (23.976fps) SVCDS with the 3:2 pulldown flag. For vcds most dvd players properly support this but not all, even though it is completely compliant. If your source was 23.976fps and your dvd player could not play ntscfilm vcds than you would hard telecine it to 29.97fps. -
Thanks adam thats cleared that up
So i would never need it for an mpeg2 dvd -
there are many time where i would do a hard pulldown -- but as adam says - not for dvd is it required ... plus when i do it , i wouldnt use tmpgenc anyway as its a tricky operation (i do it for converting films from/to 48 to 24 to 30 and for HD video) ... Shake , Fusion or Rayz are the programs most often used for really good work and working with monster files as well as AVID versions ... you can do this operation also in After Effects.
