Okay, I've just done my first few dvd rip conversion with CCE averaging between 2000-3000 3 pass VBR. Had my min at 1500 and my max at 5000. Was frame serving from dvd2avi to vfapi and was very pleased with the results. I tried using AVIsynth, but I couldn't get it working... However, a few questions come to mind...
First, regarding the quality settings, the image quality priority defaults at 25 which I haven't touched because I don't know what it is. Is this an "optimum" setting for the bitrates I'm using, or is something better? or does it depend? Also, what about the Anti Noise Filter?
Second, is there a way to resize a picture from CCE, or do you need to frameserve through Virtualdub to do that? If, you have to frameserve through virtualdub, is there a way to set it up so that you can do multiple files in a queue? Generally, I like to start my encodes before going to bed and if I can only do one at a time. I burn to dvd+r so this is not an issue for the dvd rips, but it becomes one for converting vcd, svcd's, and avi's.
I like the program and the quality seems much better than my TMPG encodes at the same low bit rates, I just find it funny that you have to run dvd rips through 3 different framservers before actually doing the converting.
Also, with TMPG at the low bitrates I've been using I was getting better quality using the half D1 resolution instead of the full 720x480. Does checking the half horizontal pixels box in the video options give me half d1? I tried this with one encode, but bitrate viewer told me the resolution was still 720x480 so I'm thinking it didn't work. Does this bring me back to the virtualdub resize filter if I want to do that? Thanks for reading my rant, any help is, as always, much appreciated. Thanks.

You do not have to use 3 frameservers. Learn avisynth and it's various 3rd party filters and you will find that your encoding time/quality will be significantly enhanced. Sorry I don't have the time this minute to answer
your other Q's - I'll look back later if no one has covered your
questions. -
The quality setting is the most pivitol and most confusing setting in CCE. Basicly for non DVD stuff it should be set lower. For my TV->SVCD I'm using 5 with excellent results ( as well as 25 for NR ).
Play with it and see. -
Thanks for the replies. As for AVIsynth, I will play with it some more... I don't think I have it installed correctly... The readme said I had to put it in my windows/system directory, is that true or can I have it anywhere as long as the path in my .avs file points to it. I didn't really play with it for long, but I'll give it a whirl and let you guys no if my troubles cease. Do I need to run dvd rips through dvd2avi first or will AVIsynth take them as is? If they're 24fps, can you force film with AVIsynth? Thanks.
