  1. This will probably sound stupid but is a XVCD simply a VCD with higher bitrate or is there more to it? If I want to make high quality XVCD from DVD rip will I have to use a bunch of CD-R's? What are some average settings? Is there a guide for converting from DVD to XVCD on this site?

Also, what setting do you use under TMPEG->MPEG setting->Video->rate control mode. (i.e. CBR, 2-pass VBR, auto VBR, CQ)

I use CladDVD XP and TMPEG, 80min CD-R's and have a Toshiba DVD player capable of XVCD up to 5000 KB/s according to list on this website.

It is one with a higher bitrate but some can make it higher resolution also (although that won't work in my DVD player). As far as the type of encoding I use CBR. I have never tired to make a variable bit rate XVCD, and you can always try a sample and see if your DVD player likes it.

  4. An XVCD can be anything at all as the designation is completely meaningless. Same bitrate, Same resolution, use VBR, = XVCD. Change any one or all of the settings and you have an XVCD. The ONLY thing which XVCD signifies is that it is MPEG-1, and I have some question about that, a question which CANNOT be answered as there is no certifying body which could give a definitive answer. XVCD is not a standard of any kind, all it means is a non-standard VCD.
