Widescreen VCD Problem

When I create a VCD from a DVD rip that was a 16:9 movie the black bars get messed up. They seem to be skinnier then the original and they are not the solid black color, they seem kind of grayish on the VCD. Could somebody tell me why this is or what I am doing wrong. Thanks.
