  1. I'm on a Mac G4 using OS X 1.5. I'm trying to create VCDs from .mpg files to play on a DVD player. When I run Toast Titanium using it's VCD feature I get the message '"Sherk [1 of 2].mpg " cannot be used to create a Video CD because it contains MPEG data in an unsupported format.'

I am able to play the file on Quicktime. I tried usng Cleaner to re-encode the .mpg file but I got the same message in Toast. I also tried to Export the file in Quicktime to .mpg but it said the video is missing which is not true. I haven't tried exporting to .mov in Quicktime because I didn't think it would make any sense since I would need to encode it again. Are the files corrupted?

I would appreciate any help as I'm new to this technology.

I have had this problem with downloaded movies before. I do believe that you'll have to export it as .mov then export it again as Toast Ready VCD. The file was most likely encoded on a PC and does not meet the specifications that Toast requires.

  3. TGPO,

Thank you for the suggestion. I'll give it a try.

  4. TGPO,

I ran QT as you suggested. It is still running and seems to be hung. The exporting movie bar is stuck at about 3/4 completed. My original .mpg file is 421.4M. QT created two files: a .mov at 521.1M and a .mow (audio?) file at 372KB. Do you have any suggestions of what I do now, short of dumping the files in the trash?

I've never seen a .mow file before, but most likely it was being used by Quicktime during the creation process. I guess you should just dump the files and try again. It seems that it will allow you to convert the files to .mov, which will be very helpful because you can then convert that directly to VCD format.

  6. Check for "VCDGear" on Versiontracker or Tucows. Consult the ReadMe carefully. It can fix some (not all) movies which arenīt Toast-Ready.
Generally, if youīre on a Mac itīs a bit harder to deal w. donwloaded movies. If have problems w. Toast (which is the most simple way to create VCD on a Mac) you might want to become more familiary with the UNIS-based tools - itīs worth it.

  7. Noodle,

I downloaded VCDGear and used it on the .mpg file as you suggested. It turned out my sector size was 3477. Once I set it properly, VCDGear corrected the file in minutes. I easly burned the files as VCDs. Thank you for your help. I just have to live with the Japanese subtitles.
