I want a good mpeg2 encoder.I've tried the Tmpgenc 2.57 trial, and it seemed to work fine with an avi file from Pinnacle studio7. I'm going to burn them on nero as a non-compliant vcd, until i get a dvd burner.I'm sure the pro's on this forum have used a number of mpeg2 encoders, and would appreciate any feedback. One thing i did find was when i tried to open a mpeg2 created from Pinnacle, with audio+video selected,it won't open the audio, and the selectionchanges to video only.Is it me,or am i missing a plugin.
    Thanks,Brad

it is a very very good encoder . CCE is also very good .

at higher bit rates the results are about the same and at lower bit rates i would give the node to CCE ..

there are other encoders out now also - with MainConcept and Procorder being strong contenders ..

Ligos has been around a long time but not as good IMO ...

For the money yes TMPGenc is by far the best mpeg2 encoder. In terms of outright quality and performance its between CCE and TMPGenc, and which one is better depends on who you ask.

I would tend to disagree with BJ_M though. From my experience its just the opposite, at lower bitrates the quality differences between CCE and TMPGenc are minimal. The higher the bitrate you use the more CCE excels, at least as far as I'm concerned.

    Cinema Craft Encoder SP $1,950.00
    TMPGEnc Plus $48.00
    Which one would you choose?

well I encode High def @ 50meg/s -- so perhaps you are correct as I was basing it on the fact TMPGenc does a superb job at high def and CCE can not do it at all ..

also I use for the most part CBR or CQ -- different results may be with CCE and TMPGenc at the higher rates w/ VBR .... also I use custom Matrix tables or use CCE matrix's w/ TMPGenc and a completly different GOP structure than both of thier defaults.
I guess what we are all saying is that your milage may vary but both are very good with the right settings ..

i see the post about the price being the factor in quality and you are sadly mistaken my friend .. i can name dozens of high priced apps (or fairly expensive) that are not as good as several freeware/shareware apps ... or nearly equal ..

    BJ_M,
I'm pretty sure that last comment in your post was directed at me and if so you totally misunderstood the point I was trying to make. On a cost benefit ratio, I'd go with TMPGEnc every time. The price difference alone out ways any quality difference you might see between CCE and TMPGEnc, at least on the level of a home user. We both know there are other ways of "acquiring" CCE but since I don't advocate the use of warez and forum rules forbid it we can't go into that.
