Straight from the vcd? Any menu's will be stored as segments in the segment dir. As for entrypoint chapters, maybe if you made a bin and cue the cue file would list the entrypoint times, not sure though. You may have to just play the disk and skip to each chapter and note the time. As far as authoring these chapters and menu's you still have to do it manually.

Or did you mean to say that you wanted to rip the chapters and menu's from the dvd and preserve them on the vcd? The menu's are usually stored on a smaller vob file with the same number name as the movie vobs. So the movie might be vob 1.1 through 1.6, then the menu vob would probably be 1.0. Just set your ripper to file mode instead of movie mode and rip the appropriate vob to your hard drive. Process them using dvd2avi and from there you have several options of how you want to make your still pictures for your menu's.

As for chapter times, use chapterextractor and just import those chapter times into your authoring program.

  3. thanks for the reply, sorry i didn't explain myself properly.
I want to rip chapters from the vcd as well as the vcd menu, and preserve them exactly the same way on the backup i'm going to make.

    thanks

Then just do a cd to cd copy in any software burning program. Except on commercial disks where that contain copy protection a cd copy makes an exact copy of the disk, so any menu's or chapters will be preserved.

  5. Absolutely.

There isn't really any reason to "rip" (as in to extract stuff out of) a VCD if all you want to to create another one just like it. A simple CD to CD copy is all you need (CloneCD is excellent at this task).

If you want to say "edit" a premade VCD (e.g., adding additional menus, etc.) then the best way to "rip" a VCD to to first extract it to a CUE/BIN image with CDRWin. Then, use "VCDXRIP" (one of the tools in VCDImager) on the CUE/BIN image.

This will not only extract all the media files out of the VCD, but will also create an XML descriptor of the structure of the disc so that you can rebuild it later (with or without editing) using "VCDXBUILD".

"GNU VCDImager Tools GUI" can help you use VCDXRIP and VCDXBUILD if you are unfamiliar with command console tools.

  6. yeah i hear you.
unfortunately i can't do a cd ---> cd copy because it IS copy protected.
what I'm going to do is rip the .dat file into separate Mpegs and then just burn them in the correct order in NERO. I also used VCDGear to extract the title page, which is curiously an mpeg also! Curious, cause when you play the vCd, the title page is just a static image.
I'll see how that works out!

    thanks for the assistance!

Vcds do not support any form of copyprotection whatsoever. Have you tried CloneCD yet? It should work. It is possible to do a cd to cd copy any vcd.

Yes still pictures are stored as segments in the segment dir. Segments are a type of mpg.

  8. really cause when i burn it in NERO, it says that the CD is copyprotected, and errors come up in the burning.

    Will try now though thanks!
