  1. I need help! I'd like to do a backup of my win2k (NTFS) partition on a DVD-R. Now, I know how to do such a thing with Norton Ghost, but I don't have a floppy, which is required.

I've tried with the win2k built-in backup utility, but to restore you need to be able to boot to windows.

I'd like to do a bootable image of my win2k partition so if something happens, just boot with the DVD-R and restore my partition. Is it possible? I'm sure it is, and one of you guys will tell me how! Thanks

I have not figured out how to do this (although I haven't tried very hard yet). If I make a floppy copy with my ghost images on the DVD, using Nero, when i boot up the DVD I just get a 1.44 MB boot disk alone. However, Windows sees the ghost images fine.

Norton says that ghost does not support writing to DVD-R, so that's no help.

I haven't tried simply making a simple data DVD-R with the ghost images and booting with the Win 98 floppy. Maybe that would work I dunno.

  3. OK, I've looked around and found something interesting in nero. The 'Burn HD Backup' option seems to do what I need, but I can't select DVD, It is locked to cd (grey field). Dammit!

But, if a create a bootable DVD with my Win2k partition on it (I have a 2.5G partition for win2k, one 10G for appz and one 25G for data), will I be able to restore my partition simple by copy the content of the DVD to the desired partition?

  4. well? nothing?

I have found that Acronis True Image 6.0 does exactly what I'm looking for and the way I want it to be done. Forget the demo, it's useless.

I purchased / updated the Acronis TureImage6 myself. For the life of me, I can't figure out how to get this thing to burn a DVD-R(w) backup image. It only sees my Pioneer DVR-104 as a CD-RW drive, and won't allow a DVD to be written to.

If you have this working, could you please explain your procedure to me. I want to boot from the Acronis Boot CD and restore the HD using a DVD burned image.

Can anyone tell me how to do this please?

I myself made restore disc for my computers using norton ghost 2003 and by DVD burner. 2003 supports it great. You just need it and a boot floppy to make the thing bootable and burn away.

We sure do a lot of things the same. Must be a Texas thing.
I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored.

    Here's how I did it...
I DUAL BOOT all my systems

I use a floppy(the original poster would do well to invest $12.00 in a floppy disc drive)

I boot into DOS (from the floppy..all my boot drives are and have to be FAT 32 for this trick)

Now to back up I run GHOST 5.1 from C drive

I select the drive I wanna back up and then the drive to go to
..GHOST MAKES ONE GIANT FILE TO THIS HARD DRIVE
    . takes an hour..
Then. I boot into Widows 2000 and Burn the GHOST IMAGE to DVD in Nero ISO MODE

It works, just can't do NTFS this way...anyway my NTFS volumes are for huge files large than a dvd drive anyway

I finally installed Stomp DLA and found it would backup up to DVD using UDF packet writing.

Not the problem is that the Acronis Boot CD won't recognize UDF DVD-R(w)'s.

They sent me an email advising to install packet writing software lin InCD, and since I have DLA I gave that a shot and it did work. The only problem is that the Acronis Boot CD won't recognize the UDF made DVD.

I just fired off another email to Acronis and I'm waiting for an answer for that one. If I get no job... Then I'll give Norton 2003 a shot...
