  1. Hi

Can anyone offer some tips on capturing video with the above card? I have some MPEG's that are 20 odd minutes long, and about 200mb at good, clear resolution

When I capture at similar resolution with the WinTV PCI, the AVI's are something like 5gb !!!!

What am I doing wrong ??

    Thanks...

You aren't doing anything wrong. AVI files (especially uncompressed ones) are HUGE. I personally havn't tried to cap directly to MPEG-1 myself (I have a Wintv radio card). What capture app are you using? The one that came with it?

When you select the output, you need to choose a compression codec, for example DivX 3.11 Alpha (Low motion) with this you can also configure the bitrate (500 or so) default is 910. This will produce much smaller AVI's but are now compressed and will not have the same quality as uncompressed files.

    Check this out also !!

    CHeck here http://www.vcdhelp.com/capture.htm

If you're going to VCD the clips definately cap uncompressed (Huffyuv) and see the top guide on the above listed page.

If quality is important, I would definately not go the software VCR (software mpeg encode on the fly) route (ie the Nano one or WinVCR)

The best quality to cap for vcd/svcd is to go uncompressed to huffyuv / pcm audio, if you want to cap for avi to keep it for your pc, then you could cap directly to DivX if your pc can keep up.

VirtualDub is your best app for the job. Then you can even apply some filters and frameserve to TMPG, etc. to encode from it as well.

Read through the CAPTURE section though, it will help you considerably
