I am trying to play a divx file. I downloading the most current codec from divx.com as well as the divx players. Divx player 1.4 plays the audio, but no video, and divx player 2.0 doesn't even open the file (i get an error). Can someone help me out? I have checked this website as well as divx'x and can't find any solution. What am I doing wrong...(I know the file is fine since it works on my computer at work).
Thanks

The Nimo codec pack will provide you with most of the popular codec's

Just a brief note on the Nimo codec pack and Windows Media Player. I downloaded the codec pack, installed it, and immediately started getting crashes of my Windows Media Player 6.4. I said what the heck and upgraded to Windows Media Player 9 Beta ... and got the same crashes. Further, my DivX 5.0 player ceased to function. Also, attempts to convert MPG files to AVI files with VDub crashed as well. So, I uninstalled the Nimo codecs, re-installed the DivX 5.0 player, and things started working OK again. However, the problems I experienced surrounded only the video codecs in the pack. Reinstalling the audio codecs afterward went without a hitch.
One odd note, though. When I installed Windows Media Player 9 Beta, the first thing it said was that previous versions would no longer work. But, after installation, I found that WMP 6.4 not only worked ... but recognized the newer WMP 9Beta codecs as well (snicker). All I had to do was rename the WMP 6.4 "exe" file name to the WMP 9Beta filename and correct the path statement. Installation of WMP 9Beta does not delete the "exe" file of the previous version ... just points WMP calls to a different location. This is a plus if you want the advantages of newer codecs without the hassles of newer WMP versions that attempt to "take over" your system, making it a default player over everything else. -
Well most people don't have problems with the Nimo codec pack, most people have been having problems with WMP 9 beta, I have windows media player and windows media player 2 on my system, the last time I tried to upgrade it, there were lots of problems.
I would think Microsoft are up to no goodHowever Nimo does have DivX 5.02, if you already had that installed and it was the professional version, you would overwrite it with Nimo.
Nimo also recommend you un-install all other codec's before you install, that also makes sure that the wrong codec is not used. DivX 5 codec can be used to decompress other older versions, V4 V3 so if you had those it would take over and would not be any use for editing only playback.
See www.divx.com on the use of older codec's -

King John,
Actually, that's exactly what I did ... uninstall the codecs as per the Nimo instructions. Afterward, though, Nimo didn't install DivX 5.02 ... or if it did, it wasn't recognized by VDub. Uninstalling the Nimo video codecs and reinstalling the basic DivX 5.0 player restored functionality, though. However, it wasn't a total loss. The audio codecs provided will come in handy later on. -
The problem with most systems, is codec conflict, the DivX 5 will also allow playing of the older codec's, so people say "It plays OK" but then when it comes to edit, the missing codec would be needed, and if they don't have it they say "I have all the codec's as it plays OK"
Going back some time, we needed to install a different codec every time someone made an AVIthere were always problems with V4 overwriting V3 of Mpeg 4 codec's. Then there are the M$ default codec's and the locked Mpeg 4 V3 for use with ASF, so get a AVI made in MPEG 4 V3 and the locked codec wont let you edit...
Most if not all of these have been fixed by packing all the most frequently used codec's/hacks into one pack, there are several packs around but Nimo is the most popular and works 99.9% of the time.
XP users have different problems, with M$ certified codec's.
Nimo 5.8 has DivX 5.02, people should always download the latest version, as with all software any problems found should be fixed, and to make sure the latest codec's are provided.
If you install MPEG 4 codec's V5 then V4.8 it will be overwritten, but not if you use the Nimo codec pack
