  1. I cannot figure this one, but I'll bet someone has the answer.

When I create my DVD project in an application (such as DVDit) and burn it to a DVD-R, the edges of each of the menus get cut off by my television.

I know the obvious fix is to re-create my project with a "guesstimate" blank border (pushing all my text and buttons in an inch or so), but somehow, I don't think that is what everyone else is doing.

Any help? Is it my television? When I look at the project on the PC it looks great. I am using DVDit and Ulead's DVD MovieFactory. Both applications produce the same edging result on the television.

    Thanks!!

  2. Do a search for:

    overscan

It sounds like that's your problem.
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."

This is perfectly normal, all tv's do this. Its called overscan. Its done to basically provide a safe area so that you don't ever see black areas on the sides if the picture isn't centered or if it doesnt totally fill the screen.

Yes actually people do just take it into account and author around it. Play a dvd on a software player on your pc and then play it on your tv and you will see the same effect. In authoring menu's you have to account for the fact that around 12 pixels or so will be cut off.

  4. Excellent, thanks! You can bet that is my problem... I'll re-crop the menu images. As for video, it has not been shot yet, so I can take that into account.

Use any image editor for making menus. Here are the details for PAL.

Make a 704x528 pic with 2% allowance at the edges.

Now cut/copy/paste to a new 768x576 pic (black background)and center align it and save as bitmap.

Open the bitmap and resize it to 704x576.

Use this pic in Philips VCD 2.0 Toolkit (available free) to create menu.
U should get a *.mms file. Rename to *.mpg.

    Use it with VCDEasy.

email me for more info. ( and menu samples )

  6. keith, the author of the thread was talking about DVD menus, not VCD ones.
